I hate to see taxpayer $ go to her, but if the judgement can be made against the responsible screener and his supervisor, then I'm all for it.
And if she has photos of the damaged urn, I don't see why there are too many "unknowns." Theiving baggage handlers would have no reason to try to force open a labeled urn of ashes, so the TSA can't use the bait-and-switch blame-the-airlines tactic for this one.
The article says that the cremains were in a box. The way that baggage is handled could have caused the box to split or the lid to fall off. Do you know how far a CTX machine "launches" bags? IT looks like a pitching machine throwing 40 lb bags several feet through the air. When I went to LAX the last time and they ran my bag through, I heard it launch. When I got home and unpacked, there was aspirin all over the clothes because the bottle had lost its lid during the "preflight" flight.
