Well I think if they are trying to limit fluids, there are ways that more than they allow is getting thru. This could be dangerous if the limit of liquids is what they think can cause problems. I may just try to get an extra cologne thru every once in a while. I hope others arent looking to do stuff that could harm us.
Eh, it's all useless theater anyway. If you combine 4x100ml which is about what fits easily into the 1 quart bag, you should already have enough explosives to take down a jet.
I think the Lockerbie jumbo was taken down with some 300 gram of explosives.
For cologne, I use small sample vials. Works great. After all, I am more interested in limiting my weight and am more successful at it, than the TSA at limiting the liquids one can take.
Small vial of shave oil, lip balm tube (not chap stick) and American Crew Fiber hair wax have all gone through in my main bag or personal item without a hitch (and without taking any 311 baggie out, which is what this is all about).
Here are two more tips for the liquid free traveler. No cologne? No problem. Spray the inside of your suitcase with your favorite cologne. The clothes will take the smell and keep it for several days. They'll smell fresh longer, too.
Or, buy a men's magazine (Men' Health for example). They always have folded cologne samples in there. Super lightweight and quite efficient. One sample is good for two days of use once opened. Take three samples and you are good for at least 5-6 days.
i carry all the toiletries i need, though i may end up using the shampoo / conditioner / lotion at the hotel if i like the products.
currently, the items in my travel bag are:
tom's of maine travel size toothpaste
jason's shampoo in a refillable bottle
jason's conditioner in a refillable bottle
tom's of maine deodorant
aubrey travel size organic's hair gel
burt's bees facial creme.
burt's bees hand lotion. this one is just over 3oz (3.14oz i think), but i haven't had anyone fuss about it.
burt's bees lip balm.
all of this goes into a tom bihn clear quarter packing cube along with my toothbrush, floss, razor, and other non-liquid items.
this cube is larger than one liter, but i haven't had security fuss about it. security once looked at it curiously, in sort of a "hey, this is pretty cool" sort of way. another time, when security noticed it, i offered to move the liquids into a separate one liter ziplock that they provide, but they said that it was fine.
tom bihn also makes a 3d clear organizer cube that is sized at one liter for those who prefer to separate their liquids from their other toiletries.
Maverick, the idea here is to travel WITHOUT liquids. Are all those products solid?
hi till,
yes, i know. but i haven't gotten there yet.
i know there are non-liquid options for certain items, like shampoo bars and tooth powder. not sure what i would do for conditioner, though. when i trim i hair short enough, i don't need the hair gel.
part of the equation for me is also a preference for animal free and natural products if the option exists. this usually means packing my own toiletries.
Try the stuff made by Lush. Many threads on it here. They also have solid conditioner, I think. Should be vegan and cruelty free. Also try Castile soap and Aleppo soap. They are just based on olive oil.

Till
awesome! we have a lush store just down the street - i'll have a look.
I spoke with a TSA agent who said that you don't need to remove the liquids anymore. You can leave them in your carry-on and it's fine, as long as it's 3-1-1 and all in one place. Is it still necessary then to completely avoid all liquids? What's wrong with just carrying less liquids?

Is that accurate? In a cab heading to SAN right now. I suppose I can find out.

Yeah. If you can find out, that would be great! I just flew a few weeks ago and didn't take the liquids out and no one stopped me.
3-1-1 for carry-ons = 3.4 ounce bottle or less (by volume) ; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. One-quart bag per person limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. 3.4 oz. container size is a security measure.
Consolidate bottles into one bag and X-ray separately to speed screening.
Okay. Good to know. I don't remember how I first heard about it, but someone told me that we didn't need to pull it out. Then the TSA agent we talked to at SJC said the same thing about not needing to take it out. We still do, for fear of causing delays or hangups, but I forgot on my way back from a MR to BOS, and they didn't stop me. But thanks for pointing out that the official word on the website says no.

Seems like the way to go liquid-free is:
* No shampoo (use what is provided at the hotel).
* No soap (use what is provided at the hotel).
* No toothpaste (bring powder or buy at destination).
* No shaving cream (shave without).
* No perfume (your neighbors within 4 seats will thank you for not sharing your perfume preferences with them).
* No sunscreen (buy at destination if necessary).
* No hair gel (no need if your hair is short or long).

At LAX now. Signs in SAN said take them out.

How about jet fuel - I hear that is explosive as well, and, in fact, it was used as the main weapon in the most lethal terrorist attack ever. I am waiting for them to ban that.
