Victorinox 4.0

Any thoughts on the Victorinox 4.0? My wife is seriously considering buying it. Looks good to me. Anyone? Thanks.

Solid luggage, good features. Lackluster design, so-so colors, on the heavy side, high price. Total verdict: I wouldn't do it.

A friend of mine just visited and AA had killed one of the wheels on his big suitcase. I unscrewed it to check the damage. It had a massive 5mm screw/bolt as an axle. That thing had a 30 degree bend in it. Incredible. They must have used great force on it. Easy to change though if you have the right bolt. The wheel itself was not damaged.

I'd look into Briggs Riley at those prices. Even Tumi as Outlet ware is in that range. So are the Andiamo Valoroso pieces that are discontinued.

What does she use it for? Which pieces does she want to buy? Why does she want Victorinox?

In principle I would rather buy a suitcase from a suitcase specialist than from a Swiss knife specialist who sells the brand. They are good solid luggage. We recently compared it to Audi. But perhaps an Opel comparison would be better because they are indeed a bit lackluster.

Agree with you Till about Victorinox suitcases vs others.

But the Architecture 2.0 range is as good or better than any opposition when it comes to rolling computer bags.

Indeed, the Architecture 2.0 range is very, very nice. I love the technical and engineered approach they have. On top of that, it is discontinued so good prices can be had.

I also forgot to mention that Tourbach has some decent prices now, too. Just not a lot of bags available.

Architecture 1.0 is replaced by Architecture 2.0 but I was not aware that Architecture 2.0 was discontinued. They just introduced a couple of new Architecture 2.0 including a Trevi with spinner wheels. Is it really discontinued Till - can you point me to where it says so please.

Ah, sorry. I might have gotten confused. Thanks for clearing that up. The prices I saw were probably for the 1.0 series.

I love the Acropolis which is very similar to the BB107. But certainly not worth $100 more and very certainly not $167 more if one takes into account the discounts that can be had on the BB107 because it will be discontinued (see the thread here).

Like Till said. The pattern I noticed is that every time I looked for a good suitcase, a few purchases over a few years, Victorinox and Boyt always made the shortlist, but I never bought them. All things considered, including the elusive "value", I ended up buying B&R. Just one data point.

Victorinox licenses out the brand to a bag company in the mid-west. They don't make the bags themselves. The company that does make the bags is quite good at it and have a very knowledgeable team.

You might have your wife check out the new Eagle Creek Hovercraft 2 bags. Nice design and very lightweight. Price is quite a bit less than Vic 4.0 as well.

Very interesting. Do you happen to know what company that is? If so, which other lines do they make?

I like Eagle Creek, too. Very different design philosophy, though, than the super conservative Vic 4.0 series.

I'd actually go rather with Boyt than with Vic because Boyt has a similar warranty to BR and is a bit of a rare brand. I own a Travelpro Plat5 22" roller which is the height of conservative styling and commonness but I love that thing. It is highly functional and very well engineered and made. So styling and brand image is not everything but it does influence my purchase decision. My biased macho mind tells me that for a woman it might do so even more.

Good you reminded us about that dimension. Just to spell out my interpretation, brand like BR or Boyt and their logos may be well known among luggage connoisseurs but represent no great attraction to thieves around the world. Tumi, Swiss, or brands like Polo etc would scream "steal me" from blocks away.

True what you say about the potential lower profile with a lesser known brand or one that is not obviously a luxury brand. I like that a lot, too. My idea about having something from a rarer brand was rather that I like the exclusivity. So when you go to the real refined circle you find brands that are quite rarely seen but still offer excellent quality and are actually on the exclusive side also in terms of price. It's like anybody can buy a Louis Vuitton satchel but few people walk around with hand-made English saddle leather satchels that are about as expensive but still better quality. It's almost the same thing for Tumi and Andiamo. Andiamo is as expensive and high quality as Tumi or perhaps even more so but hardly anybody knows them and you see very few of them around. It is less conspicuous for the untrained eye but will be tell-tale to the initiated. Just one form of snobbery.

As for theft protection I am not sure. Common sense has it that Rimowa, Tumi and Vuitton would scream steal me. OTOH you'd think that even the common luggage thief would do a little bit of research to maximize his gains and minimize his risks of stealing a dud. So someone only half way in his right mind would go online and check out the expensive luggage brands. So they'd know also Boyt and Andiamo, I suppose.

It might be more helpful to have a bag that really stands out and calls attention to it. Everybody will notice the person accompanied by that bag so to say. Thus making an easy escape is difficult. But that's another thread obviously and we've had that discussion already.
