If I didn't have a flat zip bag that was part of the packaging of an Armani bag I bought duty free, I would just buy a cheap bag at the dollar shop! Ideally, wouldn't you want a bag that you can shove in the seat pocket? Some seats have limited storage or none at all.

I agree with the spirit of these posts. I also do have bags lying around that I can and do use. This is not something that needs to be overly rugged or beautiful.
However, I would still want the ability to organize things and have good access. Let's see, some reading stuff, passport, basic meds and pills, ipod, headphone, cell phone, etc. This is what I miss with the cheap bags I happen to have around me.

If I understand the spirit of the OP correctly, I use the Ricardo Huntington Lite shoulder tote as my "in cabin" bag, but it is a bit large to store in your carry-on. The size is 16"W x 11"H x 7"D, which I like because it fits under the seat in front, even on the single-seat side of an ERJ. Stores a couple of books, headphones, passport, and whatever else you deem necessary in cabin

I have this in black for my Asus1000HE 10.1" netbook and all the accessories plus room to spare for iphone, ipod, wallet, sunglasses, lipbalm and pillow. It goes with most casual clothing and has just the right amount of organization, a few internal plus external zippered pockets for ID, tickets etc a D-ring on a string for keys and 2 pen slots.
The darker colors, black, navy, espresso and slate are manly enough to be used by guys as a hip daybag. This is a good size for a compact Fulton umbrella, a scarf, a note pad and much more. My SO borrows this bag for his daybag when we travel together and actually decided not to order the Tom Bihn Ristretto because this bag has compartments that zip while the Ristretto did not. It is also much more stylish than these other bags that obviously look like computer bags from Staples/Office Max: http://www.ebags.com/sumdex/mt_3_ser...modelid=132871 & http://www.ebags.com/case_logic/e_sl...modelid=125395.
The Kipling bag while not too water resistant, weighs only 1.1lb and is on sale right now for under $50. It is also small enough to be taken into the loo and hung on the back of the door. It is also small enough to fit in a larger messenger bag, tote or carryon and is completely soft enough to fold down to almost nothing when not in use.
The only caution is that if you are very tall or broad the strap might be a touch short to wear cross body and dangly-long.
Wow, Roots still exists and they make bags and are from Canada. There was a fashion of Roots shoes in the mid-80s in Germany. Very ugly but very comfy or so they said. I never got any. Looks like they don't make shoes anymore. The duffles are quite nice, I must say.
