I have two questions about monogramming a luggage item
The first one is about luggage I already own: are there still places in our cities that one can take a bag to and get it monogrammed? Where would you start looking? FWIW I am in Chicago and can't seem to get very far with google.
My second question is about aesthetics. I am ordering a new black carry-on as a surprise gift for a family member. The online store has a monogram option at a very reasonable charge. They offer monogramming in red, silver, or gold color and also just stamped/burned into black leather.
My dilemma, without consulting the gift recipient, is which color would look best on black? She has a classic serious-tastes personality.

No idea about monogramming a piece you already own. I would suggest calling a local high end luggage retailer and asking them if they know of anyone who does it.
And I would go with the silver. Gold and black can look a little too gumball machine swag, if you know what I mean and the red would probably be hit or miss. Silver on black is understated.

Keeping it subtle I would go with silver. If you want something a little more bold then gold would be the choice. I would go with red only if there were other areas of the bag that was red, e.g. Tumi logo in red.

Here in Austin Bags and Baggage (a chain store, I believe) offers monogramming. They said, they'd even do it for free as a service to their customers. I want to bring those bags that have a leather patch in to be monogrammed. I really like it. I know I will be going for black stamped on a black leather patch. It is the most unobtrusive and elegant solution.
As kingalien said, when the bag already has a little red, the red initials would look quite good, I think. The same is true for a bag with silver or gold hardware. The new Travelpro Plat6 have flashy chrome hardware. I am sure silver would fit.
I think it is a really good means of making your bag unmistakable and easier to find should it get lost.
Might want to consider that poking holes in a bag through monogramming may impact the water-tightness of the bag, no?
You are probably talking about embroidering the bag. This is possible but quite and elaborate process, especially if it is made of ballistic nylon and has a lining.
Normally, there is a leather patch about 1x2 inches or a little bigger. This patch is sewn on in the factory and then stamped with heated metal letters. Additionally, a colored foil can be used.
No common bags are really water tight and the fact that they have zippers and seams doesn't help. I'd say the effect of having either a leather patch or even an embroidery is negligible.
