Question Good luggage store in NYC

I'm taking a relatively long trip next month for about 35 days in Europe. I've never taken a trip this long and am looking for a good, reliable bag that has enough storage space and is easy to keep organized. I'm going to be moving around quite a lot - never in the same city for more than 2 - 3 days so it also needs to be something that won't be a pain to lug around. I haven't yet decided between a backpack or a rolling duffel or something in between (a convertible?) and would totally welcome people's thoughts on that issue.

Also, three quick questions for this forum.

1. Anyone know some good stores in NYC where I can check out a variety of luggage, try things on, etc? Ideally someplace with helpful store reps who can walk me through the various issues w/ luggage and recommend something good.

2. Anyone have recommendations for specific models I should take a look at?

3. Any particular "features" that I should insist on?

Thanks everyone!

sanjay1,

You may also want to check out the NYC forum for more info on specific stores in the city.

Back in the early 1990 I bought a large Delsey 30" suitcase near Delancey Street at Altman Luggage, 135 Orchard Street...been a long time. You get more reasonable prices in that area than if you buy in midtown or Times Square. This one has 2 wheels in the back and a collapsible handle in the front to pull.

Good sales help is hard to find these days, so you may need to try several times, but as far as selection is concerned, even Macy's should have a large variety. Or any of the luggage chains you can google.

What's wrong with getting advice from folks here, must you have a commission earning salesman?

How right you are. In the early 1990, Saddam Hussein was our friend. Barack Obama had not joined politics, was not even a "community organizer" yet.

I've found the folks at Innovation Luggage to be very helpful. No idea if they're the best on price, but they did have some sales going on for Victorinox and Briggs & Riley a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks everyone. I ended up ordering a high sierra 30 inch "gear access" duffel. it had decent reviews and seemed more than spacious enough (hopefully).
