The Comprehensive Guide to Hand Luggage Restrictions

Hey everyone - I have found a fantastic resource. (We may want to consider making this a sticky.)

Want to know what you're allowed to bring on the plane? The folks at Gate8 have done the research for you. (Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with Gate8 whatsoever, but I am a fan of their products.)

Check this out:

http://www.gate8-luggage.co.uk/hand-...s-for-airlines

You can sign up for email alerts if there are changes, but it's an impressively comprehensive list of every airline I could think of - including a few that don't even exist anymore, for what that's worth. If you can think of an airline that's NOT on there, I bet they'd add it.

Can at least IATA made it a standard size so that there is no confusion?

It would be nice, but it would make things too easy. At least most European airlines have fairly similar guidelines compared to US airlines...

It's also worth mentioning that not all airlines are always fully strict with these restrictions. I have a duffel style bag that although looks small, wouldn't fit in either "size checker" baskets of my budget European airline (when I checked myself, before a gate agent was there.) Wasn't ever questioned, and I flew with them 3 times.
