Returned new Costco Kirkland 21.5" carry-on because it didn't fit AA and DL sizers

3 weeks ago, I placed an order on Costco.com for this 21.5" carry-on.
(partly due to all the reviews that I've read here and on Costco website)
http://www.costco.com/Kirkland-Signa....11760915.html

It arrived in 9 days. 3 days later, I took it with my on a trip that involved 4 AA
flights(mainline A320 and Eagle RJ200) and 3 Delta mainline flights(all 757s)

On 2 AA flights and 1 DL flight, the GA rejected the carry-on because it wouldn't
fit completely into the sizer by the gate counter. It was no more than 80% full
with just my clothes. No amount of pushing and shoving worked. At best, only
3/4 of the carry-on went in. The 2 AA agents at ORD and DFW were nice enough
to let me get away with gate-checking it. At MSP, the DL agent forced me to pay
to have it checked.(in her defense, she had no choice, because she made every-
body on the 100% full flight take their carry-on into the sizer)

During my stop in LA, I returned the carry-on to the Costco just south of LAX.
Didn't realize that the Costco warehouse return counter can only issue CASH
for items ordered from Costco.com. I received a cash refund. A guy next to
me got a CASH refund of almost $3000 for a laptop that he ordered from the
website(which arrived with a bad screen). Holy cow... isn't that a recipe for
manufactured spending?

Ended up buying a 20" random $40 carry-on from a luggage shop at South Coast
Mall. On all 3 of my flights home, zero problems.

Does anyone use the Kirkland 21.5" carry-on? If so, have you every experienced
problems with fitting it into the airline carry-on sizers?

I'm not one bit surprised that a 21.5" didn't fit. I would never get one that big.

There's a long running thread about this 22.5" - 22.75" expandable "carry-on" bag. On a side-by-side basis, noticeable bigger than eBags' 21.5" MotherLode TLS expandable roller that we use - it is deep without raising the expansion and holds enough for our TPAC travel, where it's checked. Not surprised at all that you got flagged as we only take that with us when flying Jetblue. Have this for a # of years and holding up nicely for light to moderate usage and when we take cruises from home port, it's checked for 7 to 10 nights.

And, it's heavy @ 11.5 lbs. empty - expanded & checked, it does help to keep it under 20 kg or 44 lbs, stuffed full, LOL.

Pictured below when I placed it next to my old, beaten-up Travelpro 22" - https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...50430_1526.jpg

I'm not shocked that you got rejected on AA, but I haven't seen anyone rejected for bag size on a DL flight in at least 10 years.

This doesn't surprise me at all. I've been looking for a wheeled tote for months, and no matter what the manufacturer's claimed measurements are, once I get the bag home and measure it, even when empty it's not even close to fitting in a sizer. I think I've bought and returned 8 bags now.

At this point I would be very inclined to take a measuring tape along when shopping for a rollaboard.

There are no shops here that sell luggage, so I'm limited to internet purchases, hence the endless buying/returning cycles.

It's not the height. The OP got it rejected because if the depth of this bag. I measured it at 10 inches when empty. And 11 when packed. The sizer that AA uses is only 10 inches in depth. So, at that point, the math doesn't work out.

actually.. no... the depth was fine, since I didn't have that much stuff in there.
it's the height from the feet and wheels to the top. I think it might have ended
up being a little over 22 inches. (with the handle fully retracted)

one word... ebags.

Their branded bags have been great. a lot of thought put into them, their sizes include handles and wheels (which is why they likely have a smaller capacity despite being listed as the same size as those bags you've looked at).

i have been impressed with the quality and highly recommend them.
easy peasy

Or get a bag listed at 20" rather that the ubiquitous 21.5" and 22" bags. I generally add 1-2" to the listed heights.

I am dealing with the same issue. How is it so many bags are advertised as carry-on when they so clearly are not within any of the major carriers' accepted dimensions? Not just off brands either - I have measured several Samsonites in-store that are way over 22". I ordered a Ricardo on-line that said the outside height was 21.5" that was 23" in actuality. So aggravating!
