In an earlier post I said that the nearest Costco was 170 miles from here. I meant that visiting the nearest Costco outside of the one in located here in town requires a 170 mile drive.
Anyway...
Went by the local Tallahassee warehouse today. I was pleasantly surprised to find the new design bags in both black and red alongside of the older black Tumi knockoff bags. All of the cards on the new design bags had 21.5" listed as their vertical dimension.
I placed a new design bag against one of the Tumi knockoffs. When compared side by side, I would have no trouble believing that the new design bags are indeed 1/4"-1/2" shorter than the older Tumi type bags.
I purchased a new design bag and measured the vertical dimension at home. It comes in at 22" more or less. The older Tumi design bags measured close to 23".
Have not yet figured out how to reconcile the 1" difference in measured total length with the 1/4" to 1/2" difference observed in the side by side comparison. It might have something to do with the way the material is cut.
Expecting a dividend with my next Amex statement. I will probably keep the newly purchased bag with the original packing material. When the dividend arrives, I will go to the warehouse and return the bag and then repurchase the same bag using the dividend check.
I love it when a plan comes together.
So far, I am very happy.

I was in Costco (Wayne, NJ) today for the first time in almost a year and saw the new style 22" with the tag that lists the height as 21.5". (Also in stock was the older version with the leather patch that could be embossed with initials and was listed as 22" long.) I bought it for $99.99 and it will replace my TP Plat 4 SE 22".
According to my luggage scale it weighs 11.0 lbs without lock or hook but with the suit carrier. (TP wieghed in at 11.6 lbs) It is roughly 22" high at the wheel end and about 22.75" at the front. It also looks like the handle with its brackets is 1/8" or so narrower than the TP.
I'll report back after my next flight.

I've had a Kirkland/Costo 22" bag for about 6 years, and it had gotten to the point where it needed to be replaced. It was still functional, but the wheels needed some serious TLC, and there was quite a bit of wear in other places. I'm a pilot, so its seen alot more miles than most, and I was very pleased at how well it held up for the price.
As some of you know, Costco has a life time money back guarantee, and I decided to take it back, even though I didn't have a receipt, and there has never been a membership in my name (I purchased the bag using an employers membership). I walked out less than 5 minutes later with $70 in my hand! I wanted to just exchange it, but he said they no longer carried that model. Because of that, I purchased yet another Kirkland bag off their website, using my g/f's Costco membership. I figure that I'll just bring it back in another ~6 years and get my money back again!

I bought the red one pictured in post 38, labeled at 21.5" length.
I can confirm it does fit in the AA sizer - just barely, don't even think about unzipping the expansion space. And it fits fine in the AA MD80 DEF side bins, wheels first.

It's the 757 ABC and DEF bins that are tighter & shorter, and going wheels first helps but it barely fits (still closes just fine, but it's very close).

I just returned our 22" Kirkland Bags - these were the original redesign that came out in 2009.....we bought 4 of them for a family trip, and had problems with them on Jetblue, US Air and Southwest.
Wheels in, wheels out....we had trouble all the time, on most planes. We just never knew if our bags would fit on ANY plane, so I took them back and without question, Costco took them back and issued us a store credit. Their return policy is amazing.....
Our local Costco only has the 22" and 21.75" bags (1st and 2nd generation of redesign?), and my hope is to find the 21.5" bags (3rd generation of redesign?) since the consensus here is that those bags fit much better on all flights.
Any ideas on when these 21.5" bags will make it to local Costco's? Perhaps they are selling the old stock before loading up the shelves with the new version?
I am in the SF Bay Area and have checked Redwood City and Foster City - only 21.75" and 22" at those stores.
And ideas would be great!

Just looked over the weekend. The Brighton, MI Costco had both versions, in black only. Deceided to give it a shot. Flew with it yesterday, and pretty impressed so far for the price.

I ordered my 22" Kirkland off of Costco's website early last week. I was pleased to find it was the new design when it showed up at my house. I've taken several pictures that I will get posted here. I'm very impressed so far with the bag. It is built pretty well for a sub-$100 bag. So far, here's what I can tell you about overhead fitment:
Delta:
737-800 (winglets) - Fits in FC, handle first, on both sides of the aisle
MD-88 - Fits in Economy, handle first, on the ABC side. DE side had to be turned sideways.
I will continue to update this as I fly each week.

US Airways A319 - bag did not fit wheels first. These bins are sort of trapezoids, with both the rear and the door slanting inwards bottom to top. The bottom of the bag fit, but the bin door would not close. Bag fit fine sideways.
US Airways 737-400 - bag did not fit wheels first, sticks out a couple of inches past the edge. Bag fit fine sideways.
