In Europe, I buy chocolate or cosmetics or specialty foods. In the US, I usually just buy water and coffee and occasionally something to eat.

I'm a newspaper junkie so always copies of the local paper (tabloids or broadsheets - doesn't matter).

Pre-flight shopping routine LHR T3 - YYZ (approx 1/month)
- Bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape (most important)
- Magazines - The Economist, Flyer/Today's Pilot (usually donated to flight deck when disembarking)
- Yo sushi and conveyor belt mayhem
- SAS/AC lounge for coffee + newspaper + pre-flight nap

Other than that it's the purchase of AVGAS and Polo mints when flying self around Europe...

I don't usually look for gifts at an airport, but I occasionally find a gift there for a friend or relative.

I do away from buying stuffs in the airport. Saves me a lot of money. Purchasing from the airport is just too expensive for me. I always make sure that I have everything I need before leaving the house.

I buy perfumes as well, and I don't buy water, because I always think I'll get it for free a few minutes later.

Just found what I think is a new (never noticed it before) little artsy store, Avila (apparently in ABQ and PHX too), in the UA terminal at DEN. Bought a pair of earrings there and noticed quite a few other attractive things, but I needed a longer layover. I usually shop at The Body Shop at the airport for some of my everyday stuff.

I'm usually in a rush to get to the airport because I overestimate the time it takes to go through security. Once that is over, I relax and buy food to replenish my energy stores.

i don't usually buy anything at the departure airport - perhaps something to eat, but that's about it. i've picked up a book to read while in transit sometimes.

Chocolate!

For some reason someone started a trend of bringing back candies and chocolate from oversea trips for the group at work. For me it's always a scramble at the airport on departure date. Scrambling around duty free shops looking for exotic chocolates other than Lindt or Godiva.

Bottled water airside to refill my Nalgene bottle that I emptied for security.

Coffee if it's an early morning flight, food if I'm hungry.

Sometimes a magazine. I used to buy books too, but now I've switched to my Kindle for travel.

Occaisionally a toiletry or something I realize I've forgotten.

On my way home from an international trip I might pick up a bottle of a local specialty liquor.
