I read an article recently where a woman lost ALL her photos saved on a site because she had not made a purchase in the last 12 months and had no idea that this was part of the TOS.
Same article mentioned some pay for hosting sites but I can't remember them and was wondering what sites you all use and how well you like those services.
Thank you! That is the one I could not remember! It looks like a great site and would allow my kids access to photos while at college and I would not have to worry about losing them down the road.
Are there any other reputable sites like this out there?

Flickr is also very popular. If you have stuff you don't want available to all, I find it's very easy to sort, link and secure photos for private/invited access after upload.

I use both Flickr and PicasaWeb. Both really good sites for hosting photos for different reasons.
FLICKR (by Yahoo):
- Robust community, fun discussions, great feedback
- Lots of options and features!
- Can discover amazing photographs / photographers
- Nice privacy options
PICASAWEB (by Google):
- Very, very intuitive and uncluttered. Best photo site for non-geeks, IMHO.
- Decent amount of storage / features for free.
- Really cool how, while browsing, photos are automatically sized to fit your browser window. Can even navigate with the right/left arrow keys, and photos are cached to make things speedier.
- Great integration with the free Picasa software.
*DISCLAIMER: I work for Google, but do not work on Picasa/PicasaWeb

Interesting read, and I agree that it is something they should probably do a better job of communicating/"fixing" but I also have no private galleries and do not intend to, so not a big deal to me. Thanks for sharing.
I am looking at photo hosting websites and am interested in Flickr. I am new to this and not technically experienced but would like to be. I have a specific question regarding photo hosting. I will be traveling in Japan for 3+ weeks and would like to be able to upload our photos to free up space but I will want to back them up when we get home. Will I be able to download them? I reviewed the Flickr website but did not find an answer regarding this specifically. Is my thinking on this too neanderthal? Is there a more technically savvy way?

I know this is possible with my Smugmug account - it's just a matter of bandwidth and time (I invested in a 60GB PSD to avoid this). Check on you account though on what resolution you can upload. SM allows me to load original files (5-8MB each), but some services, especially free ones, limit resolution/file size.
Note that this is for JPEG only - you can't upload RAW files, though I'm guessing this isn't an issue.
I have 2 good sites and these are:
Flickr and DeviantArt both these sites cater to photographers alike whether pro or non-pro. I suggest checking these out.

I don't work for Google and I'll second that. Picasa is a free simple photo program you can download. Lets you create 'albums' just like iPhoto and has a really intuitive method of uploading to Picasa Web Albums. You get something like 1GB free storage.
Two really unique benefits:
You can upload full-size photos and actually make them available for everyone to see and download in all their glorious full-resolution quality. This is critical if you want to share 50MB of photos and don't want to deal with emailing 50MB of full-resolution photos. Also, if friends or family also have Picasa (the program) they have the ability to one-click download the entire album in full quality. Great for sharing.
Second, it seamlessly integrates any videos you took on your camera right into the very same web album. You can be playing a slideshow online and it just plays through the photos and if it gets to a video it plays that and then moves right along back to the photos.

Some folks may have trouble with DeviantArt as it is frequently included in block lists by web filters. There was actually a case of that recently here where someone couldn't see an image while at work and that was the cause.

That isn't all that much, especially if you want the full-size images uploaded. I'm at 1.2GB with only 800 pix uploaded, and that isn't even close to all of my collection.
