This may seem obvious, but use a camera that allows you to manual focus or manual override. I know when I use my iPhone sometimes the focus locks in on imperfections in the window and not on the scenery outside.

Good advice. Also, don't be shy about moving the camera around to try different angles through the window to help minimize the imperfects or any glare. The best part about a digital camera is you can take a seemingly endless series of duplicates until you get the shot you want.

Do you post-process your images or just take the Jpeg direct from the camera?
Most of the really good images you see in this forum are processed from the Raw file to get the most out of the image. Tweaking the blue channel down a little can help cut the blue haze I see in your example. I also punch up the Clarity and Vibrance for shots like this and sharpen rather more aggressively than usual. I think we all have our little tricks but they frequently involve shooting in Raw format and adjusting for the best possible image. Some adjustments can be made to high quality Jpegs but Raw works better.

Add a little bit of contrast. Bring down the shadows, bump up the whites if you need. It'll make the images seem sharper with a bit more punch.
