Traveling with an in-cabin pet from Lima, Peru

In 2013, we took our dog to Lima, Peru on American Airlines, and the experience was a breeze. But now we want to take him the other way. US ticket counter officials were practically disinterested in our dog, but I'm worried that going the other way, officials might be more picky.

Does anyone have any experience traveling with a pet in cabin from Lima? What was your airline? American? Delta? JetBlue?

I have found AAs check-in agents all throughout South America including LIM to be very pet-friendly. Never an issue, on the contrary. Once, with a multi-hour delay, we were even escorted back through immigration for a pre-flight potty break.
(caveat: I have top tier AA status, and usually fly in a premium cabin).
