Tough Travel With Pets
 

Hoping this is in the correct place and someone may help.

Moving from Ukraine back to Atlanta, with a dog and a cat. Most of the affordable (less than $3000 one way) tickets are on Delta. Since we will be going at the end of May we can't place our dog in the hold. She's just over the 13 pound limit to carry-on (she's a miniature Dachshund and while small, she's solid.) There are a couple of good flights, but everything is sold thru Delta and operated by another airline. So we have to use Delta rules.

The question is, for people flying with pets before, are they quite strict with the weight? Or is it more like with carry-on bags, where they have never weighed mine?

I don't have your answer, but do want to note that you should be checking the rules of whatever carrier you will be traveling on. Those are the rules they will look to when you are at the airport. If the dog is close weight wise and looks small, I don't think you should worry about the weight, but will leave that to others to recount their experiences

Thanks GoingAway. I have checked, but know for a lot of things the rules in writing are not the same as the rules that are actually enforced. Just looking for personal experience, and reading so far it looks like it might go either way.

I brought a puppy back on Swiss Air and they weighted all my carry-on bags, including the puppy bag with puppy inside.

I have heard of some airlines being strict about the weight, and others not. I'm not willing to take the gamble.
