Is it really possible that they only have 171 MD-80 flights each day? That seems pretty low.

they have alot more of all series of the MD-80 but could be they arent included in the directive from the FAA, and simply the MD-80 model itself and not say the 90s or 88s etc
The FAA report on the fleet shows 243 DC-9-82s (the original name of the model) and 93 DC-9-83s. I cannot figure out how they can only cancel 171 flights if there is any fleet-wide grounding going on. I'm guessing there was a bit of hyperbole in the initial report, and that there is a small subset of the fleet that is affected, or that way more than 171 flights will be cancelled today.
“We are in the process of completing the inspections on the remaining airplanes and will return them to service on a rolling basis throughout the day,” Wagner said.
The inspections begin during normal down-time but are not all completed in time for a normal schedule day. It's not a big job on each plane.

Based on the rolling return to service plan, it looks like they expect enough to be back in service to not have to cancel all of the flights. Just my guess.

Indeed...it appears that it was just hyperbole in the initial headline, which has since been updated.
American Airlines canceled about 325 flights Wednesday so its crews could inspect some wire bundles aboard its MD-80 aircraft.
... American initially put the number of cancellations at 200, but spokesman Tim Wagner said the estimate grew as the day progressed because the airline prefers to hold off on cancellations as long as possible.
... He said no Thursday flights had been canceled as of Wednesday evening.
