Hundreds evacuated at London City airport after reports of chemical incident

Hundreds of passengers were evacuated and two were later taken to hospital with breathing difficulties after an apparent chemical incident at London City airport on Friday.

"Terminal has been evacuated due to fire alarm. We are looking into the cause," the airport said on Twitter.

London fire brigade said about 500 people had been evacuated from the airport's terminal.

"Three fire engines and a range of specialist appliances have been called to reports of a chemical incident at London City Airport this afternoon," it said in a statement.

Radio report this morning suggested it was a CS gas canister that had been discarded by a member of the public/passenger (possibly prior to passing through security), which for some reason then leaked.

Which, if correct, of course begs a further number of questions.

CNN also says it was teargas, which would be consistent with the symptoms that have been reported.

The explanation has been that a possible passenger dumped a leaking cannister of tear gas in a rubbish container. Maybe I'm a bit cynical, but I would suspect that any thorough investigation/analysis of this situation will understand how a cannister of tear gas could have been something else more serious, that between the City and the politicians using this airport that it could become a target, and that it is likely more restrictive entry screenings might soon be instituted at London City.

Total speculation on my part with no facts (but, I think, a reasonable analysis of the situation) to back it up.

No.

Just the removal (once again) of whatever/where ever the rubbish container was.
