FAA Clears Indonesian Carriers for Takeoff to the U.S.
From The Wall Street Journal, August 16, 2016:
The Federal Aviation Administration announced Monday that Indonesia has regained a top-tier air-safety rating from U.S. regulators, in a move that opens the way for Indonesian airlines to resume flights to the U.S. and form partnerships with American carriers.
The country was the largest to lack the FAA’s Category 1 grade after being downgraded in 2007 as local regulators struggled to monitor a fast-growing industry that had suffered a spate of high-profile accidents.
The move comes on the heels of a recent European Union decision to lift a ban on three Indonesian airlines flying to the region, and boosts the expansion plans of state-controlled Garuda Indonesia, which has announced it wants to resume flights to the U.S. as early as next year if it can acquire suitable aircraft.

A Garuda International spokesperson mentioned that the airline is considering new service from Jakarta to either New York or Los Angeles next year.
