Kayak says flights are cheapest just a few weeks in advance

Some interesting information from Kayak:

http://skift.com/2012/10/09/best-to-...ahead-to-save/

It seems domestic* flights are cheapest 21 days in advance, and international flights cheapest 34 days in advance.

I must confess that I've been booking further and further in advance recently, as I enjoy planning and booking travel nearly as much as I enjoy travelling. Over the last year I've been booking 6 to 8 months in advance. Clearly this has to stop...

*It's not clear whether they mean all domestic flights, or just the USA.

The study only evaluated prices starting 6 months in advance, so it isn't applicable to what you paid 6-8 months in advance. I've booked several flights 6-11 months in advance over the lest 2 years and only found one that decreased, and only about 5%, in the intervening period.

The savings by booking 21 days in advance is <10%, so is it worth possibly saving that for the uncertainly of knowing?

At 21 days there's also a much greater chance of a flight not being available seat wise that had seats months before.

Agreed. The flights are cheaper because the ones that sold out aren't available anymore, you only see the ones that haven't sold well.
