Thumbs down 14 US-$ for each tourist - in order to advertise tourism

I just read in a swiss newspaper, that 14 US-$ shall be payed by each tourist that has no requirement for visa.

Why to have a biomedical passport then?

Please boycott the USA. It's bad enough that guests are treated like criminals. Now you have to pay for such privilege.

No need to reward this ridiculous scheme for $14 if you can possibly avoid it.

Those planning to still come to the US as nationals of countries whose citizens can use ESTA to come to the US (instead of going to a US consulate/embassy for a US visa), should apply for the ESTA on or before September 7th.

http://www.travelweekly.co.uk/Articl...fee-at-14.html

DHS -- the US government arm that treats visiting foreigners and other passengers at US airports as if they are criminals -- is going to be taking even more of your money. $4 out of the $14 is not going to be used for anything to do with directly promoting tourism to the US -- it will in large part end up being used to subsidize DHS-CBP and TSA to hassle passengers even more than is already the case.

The credit card information and IP information harvested by DHS as part of ESTA will -- sooner or later, if not already -- go toward making things worse for passengers.

DHS already harvests credit card information through APIS.

From the EC Home Affairs Commissioner's page:

"...In December 2008 the Commission carried out an assessment of the interim ESTA rule, concluding that at that stage the interim ESTA system was not to be considered as tantamount to a visa application process as defined in the Common Consular Instructions (now the Visa Code). The Commission will carry out a definitive assessment once the Final Rule on ESTA will be published by the US Federal authorities."

All EU citizens should lobby the Commission to consider ESTA tantamount to a visa, and to impose similar restrictions on US passport holders.

Paying a "tax" to enter a country is like something you'd expect of a Third World country that needs hard currency

Indeed it does, for those tickets paid for using a credit card. Just like with IP info for those tickets booked online (at least) through US airlines.

It's going to be 14USD? I though it was meant to be less then that...

My current ESTA runs out in Feb. So I should apply again before Sep 7 to get another 2 years?

So we are charging the tourists to promote tourism!

It is only a matter of time until US tourists are charged to enter any country in the world.

Civilised countries aren't that stupid. I reckon the theory is to make it too much hassle for foreigners to visit the US in order To Make America Safe From Evul Islumist Turrists.

It then follows that anyone who does visit the US after all that must be an Evul Islumist Turrist as no-one else would have a big enough reason to.

I disagree and hope that EU countries will continue to welcome US (and other) tourists with minimal hassle.
