Travelling with a Minor friend of family

My daughter (12) is bring her best friend (13) along with us on a transcon flight and vacation. What kind of paperwork should I get ahead of time (medical release form?, notorized permission to travel?, ???).

IME, you won't be asked for a permission to travel letter within the US. That said, I'd probably ask her parents to provide you with a signed, notarized one anyway. Always get a medical permission letter and make sure you have the child's insurance card and know about any allergies, etc.
