Well, you were warned fairly this could be the case, so I'm not sure how you could be disappointed...
FWIW, I love that Thrifty in Hawaii often has the minivan as the Wild Card. It makes staying there cheaply by car-camping a lot more comfortable. Seriously, with the Stow-N-Go seating in the Town and Countries, you can roll the seats in the floor and lie down in the back and be as comfortable as you would be in a tent!

Rented at MCO last week ...
The Wild Card cars were supposed to be compacts, but the attendant gave us an upgrade to a Ford Fusion SEL.

July 2011 Kia Soul, we got to choose from the lot. We could have chosen a Grand Marquis or a Crown Victoria, but were being fuel conscious.
We have another Wild Card booked for BNA in November...

I have a wildcard for HNL. I also have a reservation for a full size.
They won't mind if I don't do anything with the full size reservation if the wildcard is acceptable correct? I will just try to get the best wildcard and then if that is a small compact just go for the full size.
Will that work?

LAS & ORD Wild Car = Large Boat
I had been using the wild car option since it's inception. Until recently, I felt it was a good option. But now, all I'm given as options at LAS and ORD are a gas guzzling Crown Vic or a Lincoln. Depending on how busy they are, if I lobby hard enough, I can get a decent mid or full size. But I've also gotten a "take it or leave it" option a few times. So I think I'm done with the Wild Car. It used to be a fun option. Now it's turned into an option for Thrifty to rent cars that nobody wants.

At MSY this past weekend, I used the wild card option and received a Ford Focus - a typical compact (an older one with 44k miles).
