Poor safety record limits Thailand in world tourism rankings

Thailand improved from 43rd place in the WEF's 2013 report, but still ranks 10th in Asia, behind Japan (9th), Singapore (11th), Hong Kong (13th), China (17th), Malaysia (25th), South Korea (27th) and Taiwan (32nd).

While the forum ranked Thailand 10th overall in the Southeast Asia region, it scored last, behind even Myanmar and the Philippines, in terms of "safety and security".

PM threatens to suspend the lottery

The answer to the price-gouging is to eliminate paper tickets and move to an electronic system, of course. Oddly enough, that doesn't appear to be an option here.

"The premier’s threat came as he raised the lottery issue to public attention during his weekly Returning Happiness to Thai People TV programme Friday night.

He reiterated that lottery tickets must be sold to the people at no more than 80 baht a pair starting in June.

He advised the people to report authorities immediately if lottery vendors still defy his order to sell at 80 baht.

He said if authorities couldn’t end the long standing overpricing problem, he has to suspend issuance of lottery tickets until the problem is resolved.

Gen Prayut made clear that he intended to make the street price of lottery match its face value or at 80 baht a pair across the country."

Tourism Ministry Plans Nationwide Toilet-Cleaning Day

BANGKOK — Thailand’s Minister of Sports and Tourism says that cleaning public restrooms in major transport hubs across the country is a top priority for the agency this year.

Officials will hold a nationwide cleaning of restrooms in bus terminals, train stations, and ferry ports on 4 July, said Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul. The ceremony, titled "Big Cleaning Day," will be jointly overseen by the Ministry of Sports and Tourism and Ministry of Public Health.

Dirty toilets at public transport facilities have been source of complaints for many Thais, though some agencies have moved to improve the situation in recent years. For example, the State Railway of Thailand announced in March that it will overhaul restrooms in train stations and toilets on trains over the next six months.

If you've ever served in the military then the concept is not foreign to you that the military seizes power and makes cleaning latrines a priority.

Well they did seize power - for the umpteenth time - nigh on a year ago (22 May 2014) so clearly not much of a priority. But they've been focused on those pesky beach chairs, motorbike taxi driver's vest colors and the price of a lottery ticket, so the loos have had to "take a back-seat".

The latest kerfuffle re: failed int'l aviation standards...not sure a) these junta types know what they're doing, and b) what this might mean.

Thailand to end 'open sky' policy

Thailand will restrict the number of incoming flights as they are overloading its skies and airports, Transport Minister Prajin Juntong said on Friday. The minister said the move away from the "open sky"...

Warn move will tarnish image of country; call for long-term plans

AIRLINES ARE alarmed by the Transport Ministry's move to consider limiting incoming flights by ending the country's long-standing "open sky" policy, warning the move could badly damage Thailand's image.

The airlines also urged the government to draft a long-term plan to solve airspace problems rather than restricting the number of international flights as the open-sky policy had been in force for more than 10 years.

Santisuk Klongchaiya, director of commercial at Thai AirAsia, said numerous airlines operated in and out of Thailand under an open sky agreement - the same as many other countries.

However, he said the open-sky policy may not allow every airline to operate as required due to limitations in airport capacities.

Arkhom seeks aviation safety extension

Thailand will plead with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) for a one-month extension of the deadline from next month to July for it to solve its aviation safety problems.

But what I don't understand is the parachute and wings pin on their uniform! Were they paratroopers or had such training once?

I had a chuckle too.

Surprised they didn't mention the new service from Utapao to Hua Hin in that article? There was a lot of discussion about that route on another Thailand based expat forum

I didn't even realize there was any service to HHQ? I see K8 has four weekly flights between HHQ and UTP.

The Royal Thai Navy owns UTP and they are looking to increase their monetization of this property.

The Military Junta has also proposed, among their hundreds of "projects", new ferry service between Hua Hin and Pattaya (past services have failed, ferries sink every day), and high-speed rail between Bangkok and Hua Hin and Bangkok and Pattaya.

THB 300 national daily minimum wage to be scrapped next year: http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/gene...pped-next-year

Check out at the bottom of the article for other ASEAN minimum wages.

The 300-baht minimum wage, a more than 100% increase for workers in some provinces, was one of the election campaigns of the Yingluck Shinawatra government. Taking effect in 2013, it drew substantial resistance...
