Unhappy Japan and Korea ban new routes/flights from Thai registered airlines

Move could affect civil aviation rating by ICAO

No more cheap flights to other SE Asian destinations? When will they get their act together, when ALL commercial flight are banned? You'd think the threat of losing the ability to fly internationally would prompt the stakeholders to start jumping.

Now, should I be worried about flying Thai airlines? I remember Garuda having a massive image problem to overcome years ago...

Good news, bad news? Sec. 44 of the Interim Charter was always available, so nothing new? Maybe they're hoping to fool ferners who just don't understand "Thainess? Note that the Head of the NCPO and the PM are one in the same: Field Marshall Prayut. Pretty sure Martial Law will remain in effect in the four southern restive provinces.

Preparations under way, says Prayut, but he has not discussed the matter with Cabinet

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has said he is about to lift martial law and issue an order to deal with security issues.

However, he said he had not discussed this matter with the Cabinet and that it was his idea.

Prayut, who also heads the National Council for Peace and Order, said he was waiting for the right time to issue the order under Article 44 of the post-coup provisional charter, which gave him extensive powers as the NCPO leader.

"The preparation is under way. You will know the order is issued when it is issued," he said yesterday.

Section 44

For the sake of the reforms in any field, the promotion of love and harmony amongst the people in the nation, or the prevention, abatement or suppression of any act detrimental to national order or security, royal throne, national economy or public administration, whether the act occurs inside or outside the Kingdom, the Leader of the National Council for Peace and Order, with the approval of the National Council for Peace and Order, may issue any order or direct any action to be done or not to be done, irrespective of whether the order or action would produce legislative, executive or judicial effect. Those orders or actions, as well as their observance, shall be deemed lawful, constitutional and final. After the exercise of such power, the President of the National Legislative Assembly and the Prime Minister shall be informed thereof without delay.

Seems like a rather transparent ploy to convince Western governments that Der Führer is relaxing things when, in reality, the situation remains unchanged (if not worse).

This one's got all the goodies: love triangle, involving a monk no less, murder for hire, involving police (who sub-contracted the job)...

I set up killing of monk, cop says

POL SR Sgt-Major Charnchai Soisangwan, apprehended last week after fleeing to Laos, has alleged Ek Udon Hospital chairman Banjerd Chatphaithoon paid him Bt300,000 to arrange the murder of revered Udon Thani monk Phra Bundit Supanditto on March 1.

Charnchai also claimed he didn't know the hospital boss until former Udon Thani police chief Maj-General Boonlue Korbangyang assigned him to follow a female |doctor in relation to her alleged |inappropriate contact with Phra Bundit, who was the abbot of Wat Ban Pa Seesiad.

He said he followed the doctor for about a month and didn't see anything suspicious.

Love triangle linked to murder

Police suspect monk was shot for having an affair with influential man's girlfriend

Hospital boss suspect arrested in abbot murder

The executive chairman of the Aek Udon hospital in Udon Thani province, Mr Bancherd , was arrested by police for being a mastermind in the suspect murder of a temple abbot in Udon Thani on March 1.
He was arrested at Aek Udon hospital Friday night and escorted to the provincial police headquarters for questioning.

The arrest came after the Udon Thani Provincial Court has issued warrant for the arrest of Mr Bancherd after a police officer confessed that Bancherd is the mastermind of the murder.

The police sought arrest warrant from the court after the police officer Sgt Charnchai Soisangwan was escorted back to Thailand from Laos where he was arrested and detained by Laotian authorities for illegal entry.

Sgt Charnchai fled to Laos after the police arrested the gunman, Panja Chalisen, 49, who confessed to be paid 50,000 to shoot the abbot, Phra Bandhit Subandhitto, on March 1.

Assistant commissioner of the Royal Thai Police Pol Lt-Gen Panya Mamen said Bancherd is wanted for being the person who hired Sgt Charnchai 300,000 to shoot the abbot.

A VPN is a must if you're on public networks (like hotels). In Thailand it's good for streaming Netflix and/or (ahem) other things too.

They just announced they are making it official. They are dropping martial law and replacing it with section 44, also known as martial law.

I've been watching the Friday "speaches" from the PM lately by coincidence, more than anything else. Now, I'm the first one to call him nuts when he says something stupid (often).

But, am I the only one that thinks that most of the time he's telling Thais what they need to hear and that he's really on to something?

With the death and funeral of Lee Kuan Yew, in Singapore, this past week. I am willing to make a prediction. The coup period will be extended as long as possible with the general trying (and perhaps succeeding to some extent) to transition this country out of being a banana republic.

I know people here are anti-coup. I'm not one or the other. Nor am I asking about whether you are for or against the current government.

But, do you think that despite the impossibility of his task, he may be able to effect change? Corruption? Legitimacy? Accountability? Will Singapore's example help the Thais to finally evolve for the better?

Here's the problem IMO. The General sees himself as Lee. He thinks he is the person who will "Singaporize" Thailand. I don't see him as having anywhere near the skills needed to do that.

First step to fix Thailand's corrupt politics is not by fixing politics. It's fixing the courts.

Orders issued under Sec. 44, which has replaced Martial Law. Seems like it was simpler with your standard Martial Law circa 1914? Oh well, you can fool all of the people, all of the time, with big enough guns.

Item 1: This order shall come into force from the date of its publication in the Government Gazette.

Item 2: A "peace and order-maintaining officer" refers to a military officer with the rank of sub-lieutenant and a pilot officer or above appointed by the NCPO head to act in accordance with this order. An "assistant peace and order-maintaining officer" refers to a military officer of a lower rank than sub-lieutenant or a pilot officer appointed by the NCPO head to act in accordance with this order.

Item 3: Peace and order-maintaining officers shall act swiftly to prevent and suppress offences against the monarchy and state security, and offences under the laws on weapons and announcements or orders by the NCPO.

Item 4: Peace and order-maintaining officers have the power to summon persons and documents, make arrests, help or take part in investigations of offences under Item 3, conduct searches, seize or freeze assets, and carry out other acts assigned by the NCPO.

Item 5: Peace and order maintaining officers are empowered to issue orders prohibiting the distribution of news, publications and other media deemed to cause fear, contain distorted facts, or likely cause public misunderstanding that affects national security or public order.

Item 6: Peace and order-maintaining officers are empowered to detain suspected violators summoned for questioning for no more than seven days. Such detention must be carried out on premises other than police stations, detention facilities, or prisons, and the detainee shall not be treated as an accused person.

Item 7: Assistant peace and order-maintaining officers shall perform duties as ordered or assigned by peace and order-maintaining officers.

Item 8: Peace and order-maintaining officers and their assistants shall be regarded as authorised officers under the Penal Code, and as administrative officers or police officers under the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Item 9: Any person who contravenes or fails to comply with orders issued by a peace and order-maintaining officer or an assistant on duty shall be punished with imprisonment not exceeding one year or a fine of no more than Bt20,000, or both.

Item 10: Any person who resists or obstructs a peace and order-maintaining officer or an assistant on duty shall be punished with imprisonment not exceeding one year or a fine of no more than Bt20,000, or both.

Item 11: Peace and order-maintaining officers may allow the release of individuals detained under this order, with or without conditions. Conditions for release include not leaving the country. Those who fail to comply with conditions of release shall be punished with imprisonment not exceeding one year or a fine of no more than Bt20,000, or both.

Item 12: Political gatherings of five or more persons shall be punished with imprisonment not exceeding six months or a fine of no more than Bt10,000, or both, unless permission has been granted by the NCPO head or an authorised representative. Offenders who voluntarily agree to receive corrective training for no more than seven days may be released with or without conditions. Those who fail to comply with the conditions of release shall be punished with imprisonment not exceeding six months or a fine of no more than Bt10,000, or both.

Item 13: Actions under this order are not subject to the laws on administrative procedures and the Law on the Establishment of the Administrative Court and the Administrative Procedures Code.

Item 14: Peace and order-maintaining officers and assistants shall be protected under the 2005 Decree on Public Administration in Emergency Situations, although a damaged party still has the right to seek compensation.

You had to know this was coming

Govt could stay longer: official

Date of election 'depends on situation in the country next year.'

"DEPUTY Government Spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd yesterday did not rule out the possibility that the Prayut administration may stick around longer than planned.

His remark came after a fortune-teller earlier cast doubt on the time frame for the general election.

According to the junta's road map, the government will call the poll early next year.

Whether the administration will continue working beyond its scheduled demise depends largely on the country's situation at that time, Sansern said.

Warin Buawiratlert, one of the country's most influential astrologers, claimed he saw the Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha running the country for three more years without any hostile movements or undercurrents "because the country's star is not ominous".
