Trat province / Ko Chang at first seemed like an option, but is a bit far for our purpose (5+ hours by road/ferry).
You can fly from Bangkok to Trat and then easy speedboat transfer to Koh Kood/Koh Mak -- these are smaller islands near Koh Chang. If you want real seclusion and some of the last 'unspoiled' islands in Thailand go there!

Of course Mai Khao is the easiest option travel time-wise.

Hua Hin is a nice Farang friendly place, not over delevoped, I have done BKK HH many times, 2.5 hours tops, just hire a car and driver. Hua Hin Sheraton is very nice, out of the center, also there is a shuttle from the Westin

"Peaceful atmosphere." There's nothing particularly quiet, peaceful or uncrowded about the Hua Hin beaches.

It all depends on where you are..... the beach at the Hiton/Centara can be crowded, but not so much near the Hyatt. And a lot of people stick to the swimming pool anyway.... It's just your typical beach destination.

We use the Shertaon, great resort, very few people on the beach, Hua Hin is not really a beach place, rather by the sea , certainly peacful and uncrowded
