Thanks for the responses. Ill be there in less than a month and havent been in 4 years, I appreciate the comments. I only have 4 nights there. I was thinking 2 in the city and 2 on the beach somewhere. but...may stay in bkk the whole time. thx!
It certainly depends upon what you are looking for in a beach town. If what you are looking for is a nice beach, Hua Hin is certainly better - although there are several beach resorts in Thailand that are better yet than Hua Hin - such as Phuket, Koh Samui and Koh Chang. If you want a nightlife filled with debauchery, Pattaya might be the best place on the planet, and certainly some element of that can also be found in Phuket or Samui if you seek it out - it's much less available in Hua Hin.
I've been to, and mostly through Bangkok plenty of times. I can't say that it's my favorite city in Asia or where I'd chose to spend lots of time however. Either in Thailand, SEAsia, or Asia itself (despite posting from it at the moment). I wouldn't describe it as "Cosmopolitan" more "3rd world exploitation"
I love the streetfood in Bangkok, it's perhaps the best in the world, and easily the highlight. The shopping is very similar to what can be found many other places in the globe at prices not much better than there, the fake goods are fake, the nightlife not to my taste, the restaurants overpriced, the entire city overrun with tourists, and the number of scammers attempting to prey on tourists in the most absurdly amateur manner (even those in official capacities) is incredibly irksome.
You're eating at the wrong restaurants. Bangkok has some of the cheapest really good restaurants of any major city on the planet. Especially if you like Thai food.

I don't remember the names, but the Thai place on the corner of Sukhumvit and Soi 5 across the street from the Landmark, and the Lebanese place on the bottom floor of the Ploenchit mall - It's hard to spend as much as $10 US per person in either of these places, and they are excellent.
The Thai place appears to be a British-style pub on the first floor, but the floor below is just a Thai Restaurant and quite a good one.

I mostly eat at the local Thai cafes where a meal is 30-40THB. Great food, great deal, much better atmosphere than the restaurants Probably because I don't fly to Thailand to eat Lebanese food, nor to be able to argue the merits of various Luxury Hotels

I also eat more than my share of food from Bangkok's food stalls and small mom-&-pop restaurants, but if one plans on eating more than a single dish, expect to pay more than 30-40 baht. Eating in Thailand can be inexpensive, but it isn't quite THAT inexpensive.
