Anyway, have 3 "C" FF tix for holiday period December-January JFK-BKK. I called UA CS and they told me we'd be "protected" if the flights are in fact canceled. They claimed the cancellation wasn't in the system yet.
But, I am suspicious as this is a very heavy travel period to Asia from the US.
I wouldn't be fatalistic. I'm sure that UA and TG will do all they can to re-book ticketed passengers in the LAX-BKK or in UA's own metal.
Does anyone have any idea on when should we expect to hear from them about alternatives / protection?
In the other thread on basically the same topic, two posters (including me) posted that TG LA office thinks they'll start offering solutions today or tomorrow. BKK Head Office also indicated this week. Changes are starting to pop up in the booking engines, such as apparently no Mon or Wed LAX flights in the winter.

I'd watch this very closely. According to press reports, it may well be true that TG will drop ALL LA flights by December or the new year. Personally, unless I was traveling from/to LA in the very near future I'd stay away from them. At the best it is certainly not a sure thing they will be operating from LA later this year.
"AP adds that Thai "also plans to end flights to Los Angeles later this year," though reports from Forbes/Thomson and the Journal did not indicate that Thai planned a definitive pullout from L.A."

Is there a source for that? I'm just curious...I haven't seen that info directly quoted anywhere in the news.
When you say the LA TG office will start offering "solutions" soon...?
So a question from someone booked on Aeroplan miles LAX-BKK-LAX in biz on Thai. Should I wait for Thai to sort out my potential mileage ticket or proactively change my flight to another *A carrier and suck up the change fee?
My outbound from LAX is on Aug 2, which according to the Thai Air press release will still be operated by an A340-500 as is expected. Fine. But my return from BKK is Sept. 4, which could be changed to the new 777 via KIX flight if I read the press release right (e.g. Thai will use the A340-500 "until September").
Given the reduction in biz seat capacity (and thus potential mileage seats for cheapies like me), would people suggest I just try change my mileage ticket to get seats on Asiana or ANA now as tix might be limited? Or wait and see if Thai bumps me from my return flight date due to lack of space? My trip return date is flexible, but after a month of travel I'm not sure how long they'd make me wait to get home on Thai metal...(or, quelle horreur, somehow route me back home using Air Canada...)
I spoke with Thai Air agent today who confirmed my August flight is cancelled. Spoke with Aeroplan who says their system has not yet been notified, and no one is willling to pick up phone and confirm with Thai Air because that is "not policy"!!! I'm afraid by the time they receive notification from Thai Air, all available alternate flights will be filled. No one at Air Canada seems to feel the least concern at being left out of the loop. They say wait a few days, and their system will probably be notified.

If you are flexible (e.g. do not necessarily need / want to fly Thai), I would play it safe and rebook with OZ or NH.
I still believe that TG will do its best to offer alternatives but these might be constrained by limitations of the fewer flight per week via LAX, and the smaller aircraft (particularly if you intend to fly on C). I hope TG will act with pragmatism, trying to accomodate as many booked (ticketed passengers including FF awards) passengers in their remaining frequencies. However, there is likely to be some losers from this affair so, if you can, be proactive.

Curious to see how this pans out in the end !
To be on the safe side, I would try to get alternative travel arrangements as I would not trust the FFPs involved to sort this out in a manor satisfactory to the customers.

Aeroplan and AC will help you once they see the flights as cancelled. They, of course, can not creat more award seats on other *A partners, but they will open up seats for you on their own metal to get you across the pacific (and that is the key flight). Once the flight shows as cancelled in your itinerary on AC.com call Aeroplan and start working with them on alternate arrangements.
A similar thing happened to me earlier this year when SQ reduced the LAX-TPE flights from daily to 4 times a week. My flight was cancelled and SQ protected me on the flight the next day.
