ejross, perhaps while reading the NY consumer laws, you can also familiarize yourself with the concepts of waiver and estoppel. And just plain old fairness. Sue TG for the couple hundred bucks if you want. If it makes you happy. Don't think you'll get a lot of sympathy here.
It has to be done, otherwise Thai won't learn their lesson next time they want to make last-minute changes that could have been handled a bit better. It must be a cultural thing - I tell my staff what to do, they go and screw it up anyway, then do what I asked them originally. With TG it's the same - they'll have to suffer the consequences to improve their decision-making process next time.

Here is the 'fine print' from the Jetstar website - I know that THAI doesn't provide this information so 'obviously', but I'm with megatoplover on this....

To make things even more strange, I went to the Thai Airways head office in Lad Prao two weeks ago and they booked me on confirmed return flights BKK-LAX-JFK. Today I received an e-mail from the New York office booking me on the same flights but not confirmed. Checking further I found I am now double booked on the return. Talk about the head not knowing what the tail is doing.
what a disaster. I had booked the JFK-BKK-PVG-YYZ-EWR for my parents in business award ticket. I find out from the travel agent making hotel reservations that the flights had been cancelled. United didn't even call us for a departure in August. Anyway, what are my options for an award ticket with the same routing? United Mileage Plus has told me that I will get a full mileage and fees refund because of the changes.
too bad they can't give us first class for this error.
"Mileage Plus has told me that I will get a full mileage and fees refund because of the changes."
What does that mean? They will book you a new award ticket and refund the miles they took out for the award (90K x 2 is it)? Or will they give you miles for the route of the award ticket?
I doubt they would be that generous especially when it's UA miles on TG flight, cancelled by TG not UA. You need to find out ASAP! Are they just refunding all your miles and not giving you any alternatives? That is what they kept telling me when I called..."You can get the miles refunded." meaning the whole trip being cancelled and you get your miles back.

I would tell them you have a confirmed ticket and you would like them to find an alternative in the same class of service. I would make sure to speak to a US based agent and esclate it if required. In general they seem to look for available award space - but if required they may well open up revenue seats (they can if they want to).

DO NOT take "No" for an answer!!! Be civil and persistent. If you don't get the answer you want end the conversation and call back a few minutes later. UA can and does open up revenue seats on UA to replace the TG tickets you got with your UA MP award points. But, its not "official" policy. It seems to be done on a case-by-case basis. Do mention they are for a special trip for your parents. It may help your cause.
