Thanks stp. This must only very recently been added to the THAI site.

There is a note that '...YQ and airport taxes' will be added. I thinkn the YQ tax to be security and fuel surcharge...but not certain, and I don't think that it's too much on domestic sectors anyway

AFAIK, the taxes come to 505 THB for all domestic flights, regardless of distance, class of service, or fare. That's been my experience, but would expect the tax to go up a bit next month, being I believe the domestic departure tax is going to have a moderate increase.

A cheap TG domestic fare is a relatively expensive fare

I travel domestically in Thailand quite frequently. Although, TG provides regular service to many domestic locations, they are the most expensive domestic carrier. Thailand has multiple low cost airlines that provide good service at low costs. All these airlines are bookable online or at a local travel agent. They usually fly 737's.

Nok Air (my favorite)
Air Asia
Tiger Airways
One Two Go

I'm in the same position as you and always cringe at paying such high prices for domestic flights. One thing I did find is that sometimes you can add on a domestic destination to an international inbound TG ticket for only a little extra. For about 2,000 Baht (1,000 Baht each way) I've been able to sometimes add on Chiang Mai, Phuket, or any of the other domestic destinations. If you purchase your ticket online with TG, I don't think this is available, but if you book through a travel agent, it might be available depending on the travel agent and the type of ticket.

BTW, I've seen lots of travel agents with notices that they add on a surcharge to the LCC prices, and many travel agents don't even handle them at all. With TG, they get a commission, but I don't think they get any commission for selling tickets on the LCCs, or perhaps a very small commission and so the need to add on a surcharge. To save the most money you will likely need to buy directly from the LCC.

tiger airways is a singapore-based airline and is not permitted to fly domestic routes within thailand. it does, however, fly from singapore to various thai cities including bangkok, krabi and udon thani.

one excellent airline not mentioned is bangkok airways. it's not actually a low-cost airline, but specialises in routes not served by others, such as samui-bangkok or samui-hkg (perhaps equivalent to the uk airline flybe.com). the female cabin crew are among the most attractive of any airline.

Strange to me how so many people praise Bangkok Airways. Maybe I just had a bad experience or just have different tastes. Many of their flights use ATR-72 aircraft, which is a very small, cramped, and extremely noisy turbo-prop plane, with rear loading, meaning you will need to be bused to/from the gate. Other than those, I've only seen Boeing 717's in use by them. AFAIK, they are by far the most expensive airline in Thailand, and at least until recently had no business class available. The FA's were pleasant enough, but that is not reason enough for me to fly them. The only reason I'd use them is if, as you mention, they were the only airline which flies to a destination I want to go to.

Given a choice, I'd personally choose TG over PG, even with an AB6.
