I recall being asked to pay it once, I had an 18-23 hour connection I think and went back to the check in desk the next day to get the boarding pass or re-check the bag and they asked me to pay it. I guess the departure tax isn't included in the ticket for sub-24 hour connections and you only pay it if they notice that you left the airport.

That's why I think the OP might be better off just walking past counters A-B and going through the premium lane there but not requesting an escort or a new boarding pass or otherwise interacting with check in staff, if he can avoid that.

Worth reminding that BKK taxis don't take credit cards. So get THB from currency exchange or an ATM before leaving the airport. Best to have something smaller than 1000 baht for the highway tolls, which drivers usually expect to you to pay as you pass through. If you're lucky there might be just one 50 baht toll.

Nana / Soi Cowboy is not everyone's cup of tea, particularly at that late hour.

I'd probably just get a room near the airport and hit the F lounge and spa when they open.

If it were I, I'd do spend the evening in Tokyo and take 661 out of HND.

At close to 11PM (when OP would be getting into their taxi) the highway is entirely superfluous and would result needlessly in additional distance to the Phloen Chit exit and then backtracking to Asok*.

Much easier to refuse the highway and stay at street level to eventually head south on Asok Montri. Not only easier, but quicker and cheaper.

*If this is indeed where OP is going. Its not what I'd suggest to someone with little experience dealing with schemers and scammers targeting (often drunk) foreigners. It's too bad the pop up bars in front of Citibank got booted, that was a good vantage for occasional late night people watching.

I am not so sure about this traffic advise! Rama IX, Petchburi and Asoke Montri can be extremely busy until midnight. For going without touching expressway to the Sukhumvit-Asoke intersection, I would not take your route but Rama IX, Petchburi into Ekkamai and then green route, which is a bit complicate but time saving.

If OP was a non adventerous newbie I would totally agree with your Statement behind the *

Your route is quite good but more complicated than I'd want to give to someone not familiar with the city. The route I've mentioned (Rama IX -> Pet Uthai -> Kampaeng Phet 7-> Asok Montri is one variation) I've taken often after 10PM and never encountered any problems. Any driver with the destination and knowledge that the tollway is not wanted would have their own favored route.

Suffice to say, the highway is totally unnecessary at that time of night IMHO.
