What about a comprehensive "hope dies last"-strategy with
- increase revenues by more tourists coming to Thailand due to political stability and end of civil unrest
- increase revenues by a trend from LCC to "safe" carriers like TG after the Air Asia crash
- cut costs by lower fuel costs once TG can finally buy some non hedged fuel at normal prices

Now they come up with some detailed plans:

from The Nation:

National airline to downsize and reduce routes

January 27, 2015 11:27 am

The State Enterprise Policy Committee has approved in principle Thai Airways International's rehabilitation plan, which was discussed in a meeting on Monday chaired by the prime minister.

Measures will include a reduction of the airline's staffing by 5,000 and cancellation of its non-performing routes.

in Bangkokpost they mention they will also slash the Seoul Phuket flight and move many domestic flights such as Ubon, Udon, Surat to Thai Smile and reduce frequency

the 20% workforce reduction they will only do if the other measurements fail and only on a voluntary basis
maybe some of the flight reductions are also on a voluntary basis? if some local province bully still want to fly TG from the capital to his hometown a dozen times per year they will maintain?

All UBP flights have been TG since mid-year last year. As far as I can see UTH and URT were already frowned down as well.

from the domestic routes there will be probably soon only HKT, CNX and maybe USM left
more impact will have the cut of BKK LAX and nearly half of the European destinations (in particular Southern Europe)

The loss of BKK-DPS will hurt, there is no other *A partner going that way. Surprised that the Northern Europe flights seem to be safe.

Next time you're at the beach in Thailand, count the number of Italians vs. the number of Scandinavians

I don't know but when I am in Phuket it's mostly Chinese and Russians. Haven't had any experience with Italians or Scandinavians.

you are of course all right: Chinese and Russians hold rank number 1 and 3 in the list of arriving tourists by nationalities.
and Scandinavians are ahead of Italians

I am afraid it looks like that. A bit a shock for me as I fly quite often on the A340 and B747, much less on the A380 routes

Just some quick and condensed snippets I gather from this announcement.

1) 346 gone starting March 29

2) 6 older 333's gone starting March 29. (TEA/G/H/M), TEK on May 1, TEB on July 1

3) No mention of when the 744's go.

4) 2 77B's arriving 26/6 and 1/10
5) 2 788's arriving 1/5 and 1/7

6) TG910/911 to go 380 starting 1/7
7) TG970/971 to go 77B
8) TG419/420 (KUL) to transfer to WE

9) MXP/DPS/HYD/CMB are actually going UP in service frequency until the time they need to make a decision (as per the news article). BRU is being reduced though.

That's a huge number from Sweden (337,812) considering the population of the entire country is about 9.5 million.

They can't frown down USM; it's a mainline or nothing proposition. Since PG only flies their A319s and no A320s I'm guessing TG is relegated to the 737 or nothing.
