Big Brother is watching you in BKK

noticed in TG's lounges in BKK (F and domestic, so C has certainly as well) that you can't get wireless anymore with simply a password ("thaifirst", "flythai"), but now they scan your boarding pass and give you individualized username and password.
So they can track what you do on internet. Similar solution like at many lounges in China, where you have to scan your passport or get password by mob phone.
When I asked whether this is requested by the new government, the staff just smiled...
at other airports (Chiangmai) still the old solution

If you are worried use a VPN to get around the monitoring.

Same for free wifi in the terminal at Changi.
Various recent Thai governments have IP-traced people whose internet posts they didn't like, generally on lese majeste grounds. It has been suggested that under the current junta even "liking" certain Facebook pages could get you in trouble. Of course such tracing is easily avoided.

PG lounges in BKK have been doing this for years and the CNX PG lounge started about a year ago IIRC.

A VPN is quite useful if you're concerned about it.

swiss watch

Would not make the link to the new regime
swiss applies the scan your pass and get a code already for years
and i would really not think it is for tracking purposes

i am personally more concerned about the free wifi on airports etc
just registerex last week at an airport, had to give my email, and since then i get a lot of mails from there

so you think it is a coincidence that this new scanning of boarding passes for free access shortly after the military coup, the strict monitoring of web sites and new censure of many websites in Thailand is a coincidence?
not that I mind as I have nothing to hide

I do think it's a coincidence since PG has been doing this for years.

TG probably decided that they were giving away too much bandwidth and wanted to restrict access.

same procedure at panorama lounge ZRH.

as far as i know in europe you're obligated to be able to identify your network users in case of breaking a law (e.g. copyright violation / torrents, drugs, child pornography, etc.) - otherwise you're liable for the violation

It's required by the Thai Computer Crime law. Any public internet provider must provide the ability to log usage of the users up to several months back.

At DMK, Nok Air requires you to sign in to WiFi with your ticket number and have been doing so for at least a year. No big deal.

And if you can't get a signal with DD and decide to use DMK's wifi there's a whole checklist of info you need to submit (though none of it appears to require verification).
