First Class - on 747 TG475/476

I have an award ticket BKK-SYD on TG 747 flight 475 and 476 in February. Does anybody know what to expect in terms of service and seat? Are these the newer First Seats? Any tips/experiences appreciated! Thanks....

You will have a great flight:

- arrive at BKK in enough time to enjoy the Royal Orchid Spa and F Lounge prior to departure
- onboard: great service, Dom and caviar, you can also pre-book a meal on the TG website. The lobster has been a good choice for me in the past
- hopefully, you will score new F. TG are currently flying 3 versions of F - you need to avoid the 747 All Series (oldest F cabin 14 seats) Best cabin has 9 F (newest cabin), followed by 10 seats in F

Enjoy!

AG.

Now this is a good flight, the crew love coming to Sydney, and it shows. Thai is now the only airline that gives you two meal services on this route and spoil you they will. The secret of enjoying first class is knowing what you can ask for, and how to ask. Coming from Bangkok, your experience can start from the moment your limo pulls up at the kerb. Introduce yourself to a supervisor and let them ease your way through the formalities. Set aside a couple of hours and allow the spa to rejig your time zones whilst ordering asomething light and tasty for afters.

Seating wise, will you like it or not, depends on what you are used to travelling in. If you are a Etihad throw more gold and glitz my way sort of person or used to Japan give me another ten decorated food servings, you will be disappointed. I am not big on enclosed spaces, the idea of being locked away in a 6x2 cubicle and forced fed, doesn't excite me to shed 7K whilst the jumbo, the B747 does. I love it, if I can score 1A, it is like winning the lottery, I will have a grin on my face the entire trip.

Enjoying yourself means you have to feel comfortable. Go with the flow, spruce up a tad, the lounge is quiet and formal, there is much bowing and kneeing, not as much as other Asian countries, but enough to make some feel awkward.

Finally on this run over the last month there has appeared an "all series" 747, this is usually on the Northern European route. the best advice is to avoid it. TG are upgrading this plane but for the once only flyer, it is not worth the worry. By Feb 2013 they will be back in the correct hemishere and I hear the A380 will be heading down under. Enjoy your flight, it is long but enjoyable.

Thanks for all the positive responses!
BKKROP - so you are saying that there is a chance that by February there will be newer seats, and or the A380 on this route?

Never meant to infer that, I believe the seats that are available, are great, just don't get too worried about the 747 all series that is on the route at the moment. This series that they are upgrading and will all end up having the same seats as the A380, three months out, I wouldn't concern myself. There are more important things to worry about if you are coming to Sydney in February, there's oysters, surfing and food. As far as the A380, I haven't kept up to date as to a date, but in First it is the same as all the others, a seat is a seat, however I do like the half cubicles seats that are being installed in the all series, but nothing is perfect, because anyone travelling with heavy carry on has a heck of a problem.

So, are the 747 'All Series' birds all due to be upgraded by Feb 2013?

SYD is slated for a Sept 2013 A380 flight schedule - TG475/476.

Cheers,

AG.

Well, what great news, thanks, they are sending the newest one down a few times on a famil when it arrives, that it all they told me, but as far as the all series, the delay at DMK is mind numbing, send spk a pm if it is urgent, but without knowing anything I think I could answer you now and say No. Sydney has so much First availability, it is a piece of cake not to get yourself lumbered with one of these.

i recently got an update from thai that the 380 will be doing a tour through key ports before regular schedule but i dont know if its true or not. it will be coming to syd and i have got a "waitlist" on the first flight because of the amount of travel i do. the new 747 will be on the sydney run soon and the old all series can be consigned to history.

F availability is very good to syd and you will always get a seat if you buy or if you upgrade. with the new 747 F and A380 F, thai is the best there is. plenty of storage space, plenty of room to relax. if you are flying in row 1, then you know you are the "king on board".

as for the BKK to SYD experience, you should live it up and plan to enjoy! the kerbside service is really good. as soon as my limos pull up, i am greeted and if you introduce yourself to the head supervisor they will make sure your check-in is smooth as silk. make sure you introduce to a supervisor, not just a porter. there is a dedicated royal first check in area at the far left as you entered the terminal. the lounge is excellent and you should ask for a private room. the butler service for food and drinks is very good and the ipad menu is fun. you will not need to leave your seat except for the massage. it is 60 minutes for royal first and you can include the steam room which i like. its the perfect way to relax before your flight.

depending on the time of your flight, the service may vary. they day flights are great as its service all the way, but at nite you will want to be sleeping and the seats turn into beds and you will have a perfect night of sleep. i prefer the private feel of the minisuites but others like it more open. the crew are excited about sydney and this shows as they really do go the extra effort in offering great service and you will love it as i do.

sydney is a world city! at that time of year the weather will be warm and the days long. you can enjoy the harbour, the beaches, the hunter valley and so much more. if its your first sydney trip then i can recommend the harbour bridge climb which is expensive but great fun.

Most of the time it gets the 74R but you might get lucky and get the 9F version.

Completely wrong.

QF are serving two meals (as recently as one week ago). BA (no longer flying BKK to SYD) served two meals when I flew this route about 12 months ago. its worth remembering on QF in business you can always request a meal outside of the "regular" meal times.

yes, it is a long, but not extreme, flight at 9 hours. and for a long flight, two meals are completely normal.

I'm doing this route on the 30th of this month and very much looking forward to it. Booked on TG475. Anyone interested in a trip report? Not flown TG F before. One of my last ever bmi diamond club redemptions. Sob.
