Question about th 50% Gold award
Hey guys,
Looking for somebody who knows more than me about these things than me.
I want to use this years 50% gold gift for a flight departing MEL-BKK-LAX on the 2nd of January 2013. Can I do this?
I seem to recall when I booked my 2011 50% award that travel had to commence within that year, but I don't have those details with me anymore.
Assuming that 2013 they give us another 50% award, I can't book it until they announce it which is usually early Jan. Makes it difficult to use the award for early January departures....
Cheers,
AB

My recommendation is to call your local TG office (hopefully you have a relationship with someone there) and see if they can help you out. I've never tried this myself, but I would imagine they'll show some common sense flexibility and make the booking (TG is good at looking after ROP*Gs and *Ps).
Please do post and let us know how you get on.

As the mailing explicitly mentiions expiring on the 31st Dec 2012, I don't think you will be able to use it next Jan !
However, as the details only reached me on 22nd Feb, I agree that trying to use it in January is going to be tricky.
I would try hgp's advice and ask your local TG office.
Regards, Graham

Your 2012 50% Gold award is strictly for FIRST departure date no later than Dec 31, 2012. You will NOT be able to use this benefit for 2013 departure even on Jan 1, 2013 because the ticket will have such restriction for FIRST departure date to be valid until Dec 31, 2012.
If your desired departure date cannot be by Dec 31, 2012, you will not be able to utilize 2013 50% award until late 2012. I hard some offices allow booking as early as November, but not much earlier.

Since it was the same award last year, this is what I did.
If I recall correctly, only the 1st segment needs to be flown before the end of the year and the ticket validity is 1 year.
I did a week end in Bangkok and used Leg 1, SIN/BKK and used the rest of the itinerary BKK/CDG, CDG/BKK, BKK,SIN in 2011/12.
Unless they have introduced an additional condition that all the segments must be flown before the end of the year, is you do a stopover and only use the 1st leg, you should be able to book the rest of the itinerary for 2013.
Now it is easy for me to do since I am based in SIN, BKK is only a stone throw away but being based in Melbourne, it might not be so practical unless of course you go to BKK a lot and can structure your travel as such. Suggest you clear this with your local TG office and report back on your success. Best of luck.

I confirmed today that only 1st sector needs to be flown in 2012 as per previous year.
I am doing a SIN/BKK in October and the BKK/CDG/BKK/SIN for easter in 2013.
So provided you are not to far from BKK, it is not too difficult to stretch that award to 2013 by only flying the first leg in 2012.

Another tricky question
I am one of those lucky ones who could take advantage of those cheap tickets originating from RGN.
One of those tickets I have is issued by Delta. For this ticket, the sectors from RGN to Europe are operated by Thai. The sectors between Europe to USA is with Delta.
Does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade those sectors by Thai using my Gold Upgrade even though the ticket is being issued by DL in this case?
Appreciate if you could share your experiences.
Update: ON second thought, maybe I should not be too greedy in case it alerts Thai and I will be denied boarding at the beginning. Just threat this as a therotical question then...

Not sure if you can use it from a DL ticketed flight. I know you can use the GUP for Star Alliance RTW tickets on TG flights.
Still, if its anything to do with that RGN mistake fare the last thing I would do is call the airline

Condions say : ..... enjoy a 50 % discount when redeeming Award travel on THAI two times ..........
.... valid for 2 Award tickets at a 50 % reduction each on any international THAI flight ,.....
I doubt you can use it for upgrades anyway , sounds like claiming an award at a discount .
