has to be a public event !

the FT community is far too nosy for a mere dating forum in the traditional internet sense of it all..Pm'ing back and forth, secret MSN chats etc... what we'd really enjoy is an out in the open public matchmaking spectacular..

foolhardy individuals can step forward and put themselves up for public humiliation.. we all suggest a series of matches, hold a quick vote and voila.. a the scene is set for a 'do'.. with lots of live drama for observers' enjoyment.

i'll even host the first event here in BCN.. any volunteers ?

FT isn't a dating site and shouldn't set up a dating forum.

Gang,

I have had to delete many posts that are off topic for the subject of the thread.

If you have some personal advice for the OP, feel free to PM him.

If you have input for the Talkboard on this critical issue, then feel free to post here.

KEEP ON TOPIC!

William

As a couple of my posts were deleted (I thought they would come close!), I'll restate my point in another fashion:

The Internet is a big place and there are specialised sites for just about anything you're interested in. If you are after dating, or other 'connections' with people, then there are sites for you.

Flyertalk is not about dating, or 'connections' (except in the flying sense!), and shouldn't head that way.

I also apologise for the excessiveness of the posts to try and make my point!

The problem is that if you go on a dating or swingers website, less then 1% will know what an EQM is. Which makes the chances of finding a pretty young lady who at least shares your interest in EQM's very small indeed.

However, if the pot, in this case Flyertalk, has a larger percentage of people who already know what an EQM is, then the chances of getting a direct hit are much higher. That is, the Holy Grail of meeting a girl who not only knows the booking classes which earn 100% EQM's on Mileage Plus, but who also doesn't look like a bulldog licking lemon juice off a nettle.

Perhaps I'm being a little judgmental as I've never attended one, but I picture them being attended by many more men than women (at least a 6:1 ratio). Obviously as a witty and smartly dressed young lad I'd like to think I'd have an advantage over the anoraks, but do any women attend these things who: a) don't look as though they've been chasing parked cars, or b) have no convictions/official warnings for loitering around coach stations or train platforms, or for harassing pilots or bus drivers?
(Bolding mine)

Why not actually attend a few Dos rather than speak from a purely theoretical perspective?

Also, the supposedly witty but rather offensive comments about FT women (above and in posts by another poster) won't exactly win you brownie points with anyone -- least of all women who actually meet your lofty criteria. @:-)

FWIW, I agree with the posters who say:

1. FT shouldn't try to be all things to all people

2. There are FT groups already established on websites like Facebook, which would be a more appropriate place for dating

In what ways were my comments "offensive"? I wasn't aware that I was referring to any "FT women," merely asking a question about the kinds of people whom I hope do not attend such events.

Dear William and FT TB representatives, FT volunteers and FTers - especially the OP, patgarrett:

Is this issue still being considered - or can we expect an answer soon?
I understood the OP took on board the advice and comments and was now not requesting a forum for his matchmaking requirements, on FT.

If this can be clarified, we might no longer be wasting the time of TB representatives and our own time, where the topic might be more appropriately continued in a non-TB forum. Perhaps OMNI if it's not specifically discussion of a Do?

Apologies for my own advice to the OP, if it has been OT for this question re. establishing a dating forum.

Surely TB has some other issues in play at the moment.
[OT: FYI anyone interested in FT demographics could easily find that info - like this.]

Are you serious here? FT events attract a wide range of both female and male professionals from many walks of life, ranging from teens up into their 70's and older. If you attend a couple FT events (look at the photos I've taken in Barcelona and Hobart) you'll quickly notice the diverse group we are.

As one of your TB representatives, I have no intention of supporting such a forum.

Thanks for the timely reply Spiff; I hope everyone else on TB can make a decision.

Opposed from my side as well.

I like the current situation that females can attend a DO with the background that (most of) the attendees are more after the next MR info instead of their behind.

If one pairs up on such an occasion, well thats great. But I wouldnt like to design specific forums or events for this purpose.

Cheers,
Seb.

Speaking from experience and as a TB member, I think a FT dating forum would be redundant.

So...I don't see the need.

Go to the Do's. Go to FT chat. PM folks. See what happens!

[wharvey - removed offensive comments again]

However, can somebody tell me why there is a forum for gays, lesbians, bi's and trannies, yet one for heteros is seen as redundant? Why exactly do the gays, bi's, lesbians and trannies need their own forum if it's not to meet people of a similar sexual preference? Surely there are other dedicated gay, lesbian, bi, and tranny websites on the net that they can use.

That seems to be a reason to not have a dating website on FT.

Mofomat,

If you honestly believe that the only reason for the GLBT forum is to meet people, then you are sadly mistaken. GLBT individuals have some very unique travel issues that are often addressed in that forum. Do people meet? OF course. But then again, all events are open to all members of Flyertalk, not just the GLBT members.

The same is true for the Women's Travel Forum. It is very enlightening to read that forum and understand the unique issues facing women travellers.

William
