The special conditions were posted again:

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Resort Service Charge Effective April 1, 2016
Effective April 1, 2016, a daily Resort Service Charge of 28 USD plus taxes per day is applied at the time of check-in.

This time nothing is included, so I assume that Platinum Preferred Guests would be forced to pay the fee and not receive any extra benefits.

Plats would be guaranteed an alternate amenity (though the quality of which can widely vary)

I think Platinum Members only get an alternate benefit if the resort fee includes something that is otherwise included in our benefits package, for example, free internet.

Scroll down the Announcements page and you will find this:

Resort Charge Policy

A daily resort charge of 28 USD per room per night plus tax is applied at the time of check-in and includes the following:
•High Speed Internet Access
•Unlimited local calls
•1 beach umbrella at Sand

So, they would be required to offer an alternative to the HSIA that is already an SPG Platinum published benefit.

Thank you for the clarification, William. I actually wasn't looking at the announcements page, but rather the regular booking page.

Do you think that you could get the details on the alternate benefit? I sent out an e-mail to the property weeks ago when they first posted this, and I didn't get a response.

I made the inquiry. If I hear something in return, I'll be glad to come back and update this thread.

From Day One this property has been ripping off guests, so this shouldn't be a big surprise.
The price of most things in SoBe is quite expensive, in general. While the W is on the higher end of the price range there, I don't know that I'd call it a rip-off. Almost everyone charges resort fees these days, I'm actually surprised it took them this long to implement it.

There will be no resort charge for any reservations made before notice was built into the booking flow.

There is nothing new to report for our part. Maybe someone who stays or has stayed recently can give their experience?

Checked out and inquired about alternate platinum amenity. They kept referencing the platinum breakfast which is already a separate existing platinum benefit. Gave up and left it.

Otherwise, it was still a pleasurable stay. Had some issues with the concierge/insider service but the manager was apologetic and resolved the issue. I would stay here again in the future...

Currently staying at this property. I was upgraded to a two bedroom spectacular suite without using SNA's. Nice. Furniture in room is starting to look quite scuffed up and worn. They will need to start changing out the room furniture soon.

The Platinum Breakfast amenity policy has changed. Previously, it was offered from a continental buffet The Dutch Restaurant on the main level. It has now changed to being via room service only. They call it the Platinum Cosmo Breakfast. It includes a basket of mini-pastries/muffins, Butter % Preserves, Choice of Cereal or Yogurt, Coffee/Tea, and Juice. I received the breakfast in my room about 30 minutes after calling in my order.

I guess I preferred the Platinum Breakfast Amenity served at the Dutch more than the room service option. There was more choice and you could pick and choose what you wanted. On the plus side, there is no service charge or tax or any additional fee when they deliver it to your room under the new system. Nothing to sign. Tipping is of course up to the guest.

It's worth noting that if you book via American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts, you get free breakfast at the Dutch...this may be true for Virtuoso as well, though I only have experience with FHR.

Since FHR can't be used with a BRG rate, I usually end up taking the points.

I've been an Amex platinum card holder for about 9 years. I've never used the FHR benefit. It always seemed like a scam to me. I have looked at booking via that program many times but have always been able to book via the specific property (or hotel group) at a much better rate.....and in some cases at a substantially lower rate. What am I missing about the attraction of the FHR from AMEX?

Could be that as a top tier elite with Starwood, Marriott(via Starwood matching), & Hilton, I get all the extra benefits included anyway. Why pay more via FHR for basically the same thing?
