In Chiang Rai the car can be very useful as well :]
Over the years I've probably taken Green Bus 4 or 5 times (CNX-CEI/Nan/Lampang) and was always one of the only foreigners on the bus.

Perhaps it's more of a 'luck of the draw' scenario.

I'd much prefer renting a car and driving, and subsequently getting outside of town as well, but for o/w trips that's not necessarily practical.

I have a very important question. Is there good and cheap (200 THB/hr) Thai massage within walking distance? I assume yes, but would appreciate confirmation.

My question (about massages around this hotel) or your post?

Anyway, this being Thailand, I can't imagine there not being some good options nearby, but since it is one of the top reasons I'm coming, thought I'd double check.

there is only one massage place in walking distance as far as i know, ( and i stayed there for about 4 weeks combined in the past years ).
You have to go to right after you exit the resort and walk towards the restaurants, then next street left ( it might be the second i don't really remember ) but they have signs there as it is the only shop around. Not too hard to find, maybe 15 mins walking from the LM

haven't tried it though

In the city center you have much more options, some of the better spa's also have a pickup service but I prefer the hotel spa then to earn some more points

Cool, @cln, thanks. A few more curiosities:

-How long is city center from the hotel and what's the best mode of transportation?
-How much did the hotel massage cost you?
-Anything to do around hotel?

I intended to post elsewhere but it erroneously was placed in this thread.

It's about 3.5km to the night bazaar/old bus station.

You can rent a bicycle at the hotel to explore the area, there isn't much to do though nearby the hotel. There are some restaurants nearby but it's more a residential area.

I usually rent a car because there is a lot to see within an hour driving time, e.g. White Temple, Singha Park, Golden Triangle, Karen Long Neck ( well wouldn't go there again ) Hot Springs, Mountains and many more. If u have more time go to Pu Chi Fah for sunrise but it is a crazy 2,5-3 hours drive.

The hotel also runs a shuttle to city center ( i dont remember if u have to pay ). Also grabtaxi app works fine and hotel can call taxi for you. I think it is around 100-150 THB to city center.

Grab AND Uber is great news.

How much should I expect to pay for a car rental returning at same location? I guess I would need to learn manual driving first.

Currently leaning towards hiring a driver for one day to black house and white temple, rest of time relax at resort and take uber to city center.

It varies by company and season but it could be as low as 550 THB and upwards towards 1000 THB per day. I've found Avis to be cheapest but Hertz has cleaner and newer cars.

Don't worry about learning manual, the places I rent from have all switched to fully automatic car stock.

Oh, and when you look for prices check the Thailand specific websites. Prices will be cheaper but you won't be able to add discount or promo codes.

Automatic cars are available, albeit at a slightly higher price then stick. Be aware that Thailand drives Brit style and you will need an intl drivers license if you're stopped by a cop.

Many offices are doing away entirely with manual cars.
