Hi we have been in touch with the hotel directly. Many travel agents/tour operators are already taking bookings, but for some reason the hotel's online spg reservation booking is not live yet. Got a message from the hotel that the owner is inspecting June and it is looking at opening August 1st. A great hotel for platinum spgs, we stayed twice when it was grand Mauritian (they now have a club lounge).

This is now bookable from beginning august on SPG under the Westin brand, as discussed. Rates I found were 118 eur, it's cat 4. C and P also widely available.

Westin Turtle Bay Mauritius - No news is, um, good news?

We booked several months ago for a fortnight in September, when the "confirmed opening date" was Spring 2014.

That slipped to 1 August 2014, which gave me a six week cushion. Tight, but just about manageable.

Then, with a couple of days to go, the hotel reservation system stopped offering availability for August and slipped to what seems to be a 1 September opening date. The website still indicates a 1 August opening date. The photographs have been partly updated (although, worryingly, there are no new photographs of the room interiors).

Does anyone know what's going on and whether, if the hotel is going to be open at all in September, it is going to be more lively than a ghost town? Customer service and online updates are basically non-existent.

A response from an SPG insider (or even from the hotel itself) would be very welcome (because I will be in a lot of trouble with Mrs Umbricius if we arrive from our flight to a building site or an empty film set...).

Thanks!

Given past form (we stayed shortly after opening last time) I would want to be nowhere near this property when it first opens.

L-o-M,

Thanks for your post.

I read your long and helpful postings with a growing sense of dread. I can only keep my fingers crossed that an extra three weeks post-opening will be enough to iron out any snagging of the sort that you had to deal with, and that the Starwood people will have learnt from their past mistakes - and from your review.

Having said all that, you have me worried!

The whole question of the re opening date has been ongoing, I honestly thought it would either leave Starwood or just not be granted a license due to the fire that occured when it closed down.

We stayed at the GM twice (our third stay was cancelled due to the fire and we declined to be moved to the Meridien). We always enjoyed it, it is a beautiful setting and the platinum recognition was the best I have ever received, great suite upgrades, always comping bottles of wine with dinner and we always enjoyed our time there, no it is not a Four Seasons or St Regis but for the price was excellent value with the half board option being excellent.

We have a booking for November, but if they pushed the opening back to September hopefully this will be the last delay. If it doesn't re open in time for your stay they should move you to another Starwood and I would not accept the Meridien, but request the St Regis.

I have been in touch with the hotel emailing Ado and he should be able to keep you up to date. This also answers my question as to why no Tripadvisor reviews yet!

Good luck but it is a great hotel and in worst case scenario you will have an upgrade to St Regis.

Thanks, fdemoulin, for your helpful suggestion.

I agree that the price - particularly with the opening offer - was excellent value, although I don't think that I'll be saying the same thing if the hotel is in a soft-opening phase (and I know that I'll never hear the end of it if the spa isn't fully functional!).

I knew that they had moved some guests from the Westin to (I think) the St Regis earlier in the year, but I wonder how feasible it will be as the season hots up.

I'll let you know if we hear more from Starwood, as I'm going to ask my agent to put a(nother) call in to the hotel for an update (and for photographs).

Thanks again,

Umbricius

If you would send us the confirmation number for your stay, we'd be glad to have the property reach out to you directly.

If it's coming back as a category 4 Westin, then LM would seem to be roughly equivalent rather than StR. Yes, there should be a gesture for the inconvenience and you shouldn't be sent to an objectively worse hotel without a refund of the rate, but you also can't expect to be sent to a much better hotel without paying a reasonable price differential based on the date your reservation was made.
