Actually, British and European visitors are starting to arrive in huge numbers in Cancun, as well as increasing numbers of Brazilians.

American football is a good way to drive them away. They want soccer. And they probably don't want to watch it with people who know nothing of the global game.

So you can argue it both ways.

Maybe they should have both.

.
Yes, we observed a few Euros at Lagunamar - I heard Russian and French. Plus quite a few Mexicans. But I'd estimate 80%+ of clientele were from USA. And the surest way to turn off US males (not to mention women and children) is televised soccer from Mexico (world cup excepted). This was clearly put on to entertain the bar staff, who were not particularly fast to serve. Football is 2 days a week, they obviously understood that in the sports bar - why not the pool area?? Again, incompetent management.

Funnily enough, during the last 2 Euros (4 yearly European soccer championships, which are in Olympic years and are considerably bigger worldwide than the Olympics) I have taken a trip with my family from the USA to Mexico so that we can enjoy wall-to-wall TV coverage.

I own at Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas - remember Australians are Hawaii's number 3 visitors after Japanese and Californians - and always get annoyed by the fact that there's a Sports Bar but I can't watch the European Champions League.

Americans have a tendency to think that other English-speakers are interested in the same sports as them. We're not!

Is this still the case? I am looking to go to Cancun to this hotel in April. No perks at all for Platinum?

It was the case back in July 2010 when that posting was made. Things have changed a bit since then.

Does that mean they honor the breakfast benefit now?

Many SVO properties are opted out because there are no food and beverage outlets onsite. I don't know if that applies here or not, so maybe one of your peers who've been there can assist?

I love Americans, I do. But part of the travel experience is to realize that you are in a different country and Cancun is not part of the Lower 48. That being said, with multiple TVs in these lounges, you would think that there could be a compromise with the clientele. To say that the Westin Lagunamar guest are 80 percent American is completely false and uninformed btw.

Lounge? Since when? Are you sure it wasn't Westin Cancun -- not Lagunamar? They didn't have any lounge late 2011... Not on their website either...
Yes, they offer free breakfast as Plat amenity and one class upgrade to 1 bedroom suite. Sometimes. This is it.

Any luck on a late checkout? I would be looking for 1:30 or so.

Confirmed Lounge (Access)?

Heading down in a few weeks and would like to know about Platinum lounge at this property. I'll reach out to my concierge and post her reply, but would appreciate anyone confirming a lounge and access to it.

Thanks.
