I'm working on my SPG Gold status this year. Still basic member, just completed my 9th stay. 10th stay to cinch Gold will be in 2 weeks.
I just want to say that even without SPG elite status, for some reason or another they have treated me well. Of the 9 stays, I got a room upgrade 5 times (once even a double upgrade at Le Meridien Jakarta). I didn't even ask, they just gave it to me. My last stay at Sheraton Bandung wasn't in an upgraded room, but they gave me an "enhanced" room - very strategically located just steps away from the swimming pool.
Further, starting from my 6th stay I've always found a plate of fruits and/or others waiting in the room (plate of very well selected fruits and bowl of mixed nuts/raisins at Hermitage Jakarta).
It feels very nice to have been getting Gold treatment (so it seems to me) before hitting that level. I can't wait til I am officially a Gold member.
PS: All of these stays are in Southeast Asia (specifically Jakarta, Bandung and Bali, Indonesia; and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia). If that makes any difference.
