Stayed here this 2 weeks ago (2/2016). 25/Plat. Former New Orleans native in town on business for a couple days. Have also stayed at the Sheraton (both the one off Canal and the one in Metairie) in the past.

Booked a standard room but was moved to the SPG Suites on the top floor. Rooms are huge and pretty nice.

Platinum Options: Offered 500 Starpoints or breakfast in the restaurant downstairs. Opted for breakfast - easily the better call. Large variety of hot foods (eggs, omelette station, benedicts, sausage, bacon, grits, biscuits and gravy) as well as a fruit and yogurt bar with different types of juices. Retail on breakfast per the menu was $23. If you've never been to New Orleans before, take the points and go get breakfast at one of the many establishments nearby in the CBD or the Quarter (Ruby Slipper or Stanley come to mind) but if you're trying to save some money, breakfast is a good option.

Internet: Decent speed, free for up to 3 devices per room per the sign-in. Able to stream Netflix to a FireTV stick with no issues. My room had an ethernet port so if you have a travel router its easy to get over 3 devices.

Parking: A pain everywhere in the FQ. There's a street lot right behind Canal Place but I opted to park in the deck. Was ~28/night if I recall.

Participates in Make-A-Green-Choice?: Yes.

Other amenities: Rooftop pool, is built into Canal Place so there's shopping, a food court (though seriously, go out and eat in the Quarter), a nice movie theater, and a Starbucks all built adjacent/below the hotel. No issues with late check-out up to 4p for Platinums.

Overall: The view is fantastic - request a FQ/River view if available over the Harrahs/CBD view. Well placed at the foot of Canal Street for your CBD and FQ exploratory needs. Parking is expensive so weigh that in mind as to whether renting a car makes more sense than a Taxi or Uber. I'm from New Orleans and love staying at this hotel when I come back into town. Absolutely a beautiful place to stay during the holidays as well.

Comparison to the Sheraton down the road: The Westin just feels nicer, less crowded, and especially during any big time in the city (Jazz Fest, Mardi Gras, French Quarter Fest) just feels like less of a madhouse. Granted during FQF the hotel is *RIGHT NEXT* to some stages and gets loud, if that bothers you get a Harrahs/CBD view room on the other side of the building.

Do they check ID on corporate rates here? One of us has a legitimate ID but we need to book 3-4 rooms, so wondering if they would need one per room. The rate is a significant cut over 60%

The person with the ID and ability to book the rate should book all rooms. I've been asked for my corporate ID in the past. Do the right thing and you wont have to worry.

Thanks, that is the plan. Just worried they somehow might care he is booking multiple rooms and will not honor the rate since it's quite a significant discount.

Recommend against booking a 1200 sq ft suite, as they are situated by the elevator. In addition to the constant elevator noise, you can hear lots of conversations from people waiting for the elevator. The larger suites are on the corner of the building, and insulated from the aforementioned noise.

WiFi is barely usable. Saw top speeds of 1.3Mbps, and connections would frequently drop out. Ethernet connection topped out at 2.7Mpbs. I'm going to have to find another NoLA hotel for future stays.

Currently spending one night here as a Gold member staying on a sub $100 corporate rate.

Upgraded prior to check-in to a French Quarter suite, one of the aforementioned 1,200 square foot suites on the 29th floor (seriously, it is huge, even if not laid out in the best manner).

Room is clean and in decently good shape. Noise from hallway and the elevator have not been of concern thus far, but it seems to be a slow weekday night.

Location is across the street from Harrah's. If one plans to park their car and let it stay, you can park for "free" across the street in the Harrah's parking deck. You must be a Total Rewards member and you must play for 30 minutes, but doing so will give you 24 hours of complimentary parking. I played blackjack slots tonight for 30 minutes, had a few free drinks, and left only $7 down. Much better than the $39/night valet fee at this hotel.

Nearly 9 months since the last post? Any recent updates welcome. I've got a 4 night stay later this year and it is a toss-up between the Westin and the Sheraton. (Conference is at neither place, but both are a short walk.) I'm primarily concerned about a nice platinum upgrade, decent gym, and a 4pm checkout. Breakfast as amenity and lounge aren't that critical, as conference will provide plenty of both.

What month is the conference and what location?

Although not critical, the Westin does not have a lounge, so your option would be the Sheraton. It's the only Starwood property in the CBD with a lounge.

Personally, I like the Sheraton since I usually get a corner suite. But the Westin is nice being closer to the river (and Harrah's!).

This comment is nearly a year old but I wanted to provide you with an update on our guestroom Internet at The Westin New Orleans Canal Place. We have installed one access point for every 4 guestrooms, which is now connecting at a much quicker speed. We made recent updates to our wireless access in our public areas and meeting rooms as well. We hope to welcome you back soon.

Be well,

Stay Report - 4/3 - 4/4

Location: As the name implies the hotel is located on Canal right on top of the Canal Place Mall. As a N.O. Base of Operations it's very good. You're an easy walk to the French Quarter, you're on the trolley line (there's a stop right in front of the hotel) and the Harrah's Casino is across the street (great casino btw). An Uber is around $35 to MSY and it's very very easy to get one here.

Hotel: Aging and aging badly. Due to its location it's also a strange building. There's a back entrance on Iberville where the hotel's valet and pick up and drop off is and then you'll have to take one elevator to the 11th floor to check in. Alternatively you can head down a different set of elevators to 1st floor of Canal Place and walk out to the Canal Street side. The lobby has a concierge, restaurant and bar and some seating areas with nice views of the river. The 12th floor has a business center and the rooms are above that.

Check In: The last thing you want to see when you arrive at 12:30 AM is a line of people in front of you. Once I got to the front the agent thanked me for my status, gave me a scratch card to win bonus points (I got 500) and asked if I wanted my late checkout. Then things took a turn as she couldn't figure out how to finish checking me in. It took an extra few minutes and at that hour I'm really not patient but finally I got to my room.

Room: Awful. If this was a Choice property it would be one thing, but I expect more at a $200/night Westin. My room had a lot of dead space and in that dead space, stained carpet. I had broken and damaged furniture. No outlets near the bed. A tiny bathroom. The sound proofing is also pretty bad (they give you earplugs along with a letter about the charming sounds of New Orleans). I was working in my room the next morning and was driven away by earsplitting construction noise. I'm glad they're renovating at least.

Weird dead space and stained carpet

Broken lamp, scuffed mirror

Other: There is no lounge. As a Titanium my breakfast was a buffet in the lobby which had scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, egg and bacon biscuits, breads, fruit and some cold cuts. Slightly above average. I had to print a document from the business center which charges you $7.95 to log onto a computer and then $.60 a page to print only to find the printer was broken. The front desk at least printed for me.

Frankly, this place is a dump and while it may be nice after renovation I won't be back. The Doubletree across the street is believe it or not way nicer.

Aloft and Moxy are even much better options. There is not really a great hotel in the entire city, maybe that wlil change when the four seasons opens. I would avoid the Westin, W, Marriot, and Sheraton in the bonvoy collection. The JW Marriot is OK and is being renovated so would probably be my first choice at this point. The Ritz is just OK, but not for the price they charge.
