I'm glad this happened and it should happen more. However, it should be done in a tactful manner.
Given what was posted there were no rules that needed to be enforced. The wife did not ask for nor received a plat upgrade. "Person B" was totally out of line and was making up rules. Properties need to be called on this. They obviously didn't properly train their staff. I'm glad "Person A" used some common sense and didn't take any action.

Firstly... I was not pleased about the manner of the delivery. Instead of addressing my wife, she addressed the other front desk agent in a snippy manner while my wife was standing there.

Secondly, per the T&C, I do not feel I broke any rules at all. "Under Section 3 - REDEEMING STARPOINTS... 3.1.c. SPG Awards are typically non-transferable, but certain SPG Awards may be given to a third party where an SPG Member makes the request at the time the SPG Award is issued. The guest using the SPG Award may be required at check-in to show proper identification and provide a credit card to the SPG Participating Hotel for incidental charges."

I absolutely made the request at the time of the award just in-case I was not able to make it (which I missed her by one day due to a work issue). She did have to show proper ID and did provide a credit card for incidental charges just as stated in the T&C.

I've scanned through this thread. If I understand correctly, if a Plat friend makes a reservation for me using his points, I can present my SPG Plat card at check in and I will be eligible for upgrade, lounge access, Plat amenity, stay credit, etc. Correct?

I have a reservation on points that I won't be able to use. I want to give it as a gift to a family member; I will change the guest's name accordingly through SPG.
Since I am not going to be present in the hotel: can I still request suite night awards, to be enjoyed by my guest?

Sadly, you can't.

See the Suite Nights FAQ #18.

The problem, I suppose, is that the SPG number of the giftor has to stay on the reservation, so it is going to have to be noted by contacting the property in advance or at check-in. Platinum Concierge should be able to assist if it needs to be done in advance.

My partner booked a night using his points in a hotel for me. He is a regular member but I am a Gold member. I am keen to get the 4pm checkout but when I called the hotel they said I could not use my benefits as it was booked under his account . They were quite firm. Anyone know whether I can try to argue the point at checkin or is what they say correct?

IME the person you talked with was incorrect. Ask politely when you are checking in. You should get all your on-site benefits including 4pm checkout. If denied, ask for a manager, and if they still refuse call SPG and ask them to educate the property.

The annoying thing is that if it was the other way round they would deny me my partners gold benefits because he's not present. Not really fair they get it both ways. The property is newly flagged as starwood and the guy on the phone sounded like he was just making a decision on the spot that I shouldn't get the benefits. I guess I'll argue my case at check in.

Many, many, many times FDCs (and others) will make up rules to deny benefits. If everyone knew and followed the T&Cs FT would be boring! Travelling defensively is a requirement these days. If your stay is by chance during the week, then do engage SPG if the property refuses.

Keep us posted on the outcome Enigma368. Also would this happened to be resort and conference center hotels?

I do not think so, its a regular Four Points by Sheraton in Las Vegas. The guy I spoke to did not deny me a late checkout - I just asked whether my Gold status would be honored on this booking and he said a firm no. I checkin later tonight so will report what happens.

Thyetus(or William), can you tell me what I should do if Gold benefits are denied? I guess speak to manager in the morning? It would be helpful if I could say that you guys have confirmed I should be entitled to my Gold benefits so that I can say this if I have to discuss with manager.

Dear Enigma368,

Thank you for your response.

I understand that Christina has replied to your email a while ago. Do inform the property on your SPG status prior to arrival and if you are denied your late check-out benefit upon checking in, reply to our latest email to you with the details.

Turns out all was fine in the end. The checkin guy(at 3.20am - very delayed flight) could not have been nicer about giving me my 4pm checkout when I gave him my gold number. No upgrade as hotel is full but the late checkout was all I really wanted.

Guess I was just unlucky with the person I spoke to earlier in the day who categorically said I wouldn't get gold benefits.

I'm trying to book an Spg award stay for my brother on a trip with myself physically checking in for platinum benefits. I will be staying at another property the first part of the trip. Will the system recognize myself trying to check into a different Spg property on the 2nd half of my trip to get platinum benefits?

You probably won't have a problem checking in, but don't expect to get credit or points for both stays. SPG allows credit for multiple rooms on the same night, but only if they're at the same property.
