Westin or Intercontinenal?

I'm looking at this weekend for 1 night as a bday gift for my father...

Trying to decide between this hotel @ 4800 pts & $90 or the Intercontinental @ 30k pts. I'm spg plat but only IC Ambassador (I'll do the check-in in person), so I don't know which will give a better overall experience. (reviews here make it sound like plat 'treatment' at this hotel is hit or miss).

I haven't stayed at either of these hotels, so any advice from those who know both would be appreciated.

We stayed here twice over the past 2 years, for a total of 7 nights. Very nice suite upgrades both times, though the second time, we used 5 platinum suite night UPG awards. Excellent hotel, and the buffet breakfast you get access to as a Plat is outstanding. Great location near/overlooking Prado Museum...no complaints from us at all. Both stays were in May, fwiw.

Just a data point as an SPG Gold on a Cash & Points stay.

I received a response from the hotel GM. I emailed regarding upgrade options. He promptly responded with two:

1. free upgrade to premium view
2. upgrade to junior suite at 7,500 points per night

Upgrades to Junior (600 sq. ft.) or Executive (1000 sq. ft.) suite?

Anyone stay at this hotel with children? What's the policy on number of children allowed in a room?

Hotel site says:

Family Plan Policy: Children who are 12 or younger sleep for free in the existing bedding of a room shared with a paying adult. Rollaways, child rollaways and cribs may incur extra charges.

Every room at this property accommodates 3 or 4 persons. If you have one child and two adults, pick a room that will accommodate 3. If you have two children and two adults, pick one that will accommodate 4.

Don't add any additional bedding and there will be no extra charges as long as the children are 12 or under.

Thank you Williams.

We are using Cash and Points so are limited to just the one choice (I believe it is the Deluxe room). Our party consists of 2 adults and 2 children (both under the age of 6).

Based on the description of the child policy and your comment, we should not have any issues.. however, if we do have any issues, what do you suggest we do?

Sorry Mr. Sanders, I'd disagree with you on that point. My wife and I stayed at your hotel this past summer, king size bed, and I don't know where you'd put two roll aways or for that matter one. This was a regular room, unrenovated facing out to the courtyard. I wasn't Plat at the time, money plus points, so we weren't given a stellar room (nor did we expect one). Great location though.

To be fair- last time I checked William was responsible for the SPG program roles- not for Westin hotels nor the Palace. I have stayed here quite a few times and the variation in guest rooms is huge- as are the size differences. If the hotel is selling a room that accommodates 4 people- it will probably not be a smaller one.

In the price bracket of the Westin it is one of the better choices in Madrid.

I think the hotel was great - Prada across the street, great restaurants / bars nearby, fun to watch protests in front of parliament, etc. My comment was more to Mr. Sanders' point that you can fit a rollaway in every room. Based on the room I was assigned, I disagreed.

Question: Should I post any questions about the area (tourist attractions, restaurants etc) near the Westin, Madrid in this forum or is that a no-no?

Post away I think. The location is very good located directly next to the most important musuems/galleries, the metro, the park, and walking distance to many good restaurants.

Stayed here on my honeymoon in September. Fantastic location, although it was a bit of a hike with two bags to a metro stop in the late summer heat. 6 or 7 blocks depending which stop you go to. Accessibility to the Ave station was key too as we went down to Sevilla for a week.

I'm platinum and booked this at the last minute after an less-than-exhilarating stay at a boutique hotel the first two days we were in Madrid. I had blown most of my points at the W in Barcelona for 6 nights, but had enough in the bank to book the Palace by this point. Got a room and a complimentary upgrade to a massive junior suite. As others mentioned, buffet is ridiculously good.
