FAQs
Earning: Registered members will earn double Starpoints at participating hotels and resorts on eligible stays of two or more nights within the earning period. Registered members who earn double Starpoints will earn an additional two (2) Starpoints per eligible US$1 spent (for a total of four [4] Starpoints per dollar). Elite-level extra Starpoints earnings and other bonuses will not be doubled. Only the base two-Starpoints-per-dollar eligible earnings are doubled. Registered members will earn triple Starpoints at participating hotels and resorts on eligible weekend stays of two or more nights within the earning period. Registered members who earn triple Starpoints will earn an additional four (4) Starpoints per eligible US$1 spent (for a total of six [6] Starpoints per dollar). Elite-level extra Starpoints earnings and other bonuses will not be doubled or tripled. Only the base two-Starpoints-per-dollar eligible earnings are doubled or tripled (collectively, the "promotion"). Offer is eligible with other Starpoints promotions; however, each offer will award bonus Starpoints independently of each other, and offers may not be combined.
Bonusing: The bonus Starpoints will post to the registered member's account within two [2] to four [4] weeks after the eligible stay posts.
Eligible stays and nights: An eligible stay is defined as one or more consecutive nights paying an eligible rate in the same hotel or resort, regardless of the number of check-ins or checkouts that occur, and posting to the registered member’s Starwood Preferred Guest account. An eligible night is defined as at least one night paying an eligible rate in the earning period. An eligible rate is any rate that is eligible to earn Starpoints in the Starwood Preferred Guest program. A description of eligible stays and eligible rates can be found at spg.com under the program terms and conditions. See Section 2.1 for the complete definition of eligible rates. Note that certain prepaid room reservations — such as when the booking is made through a third party, including but not limited to travelocity.com, expedia.com, orbitz.com and delta.com — are not considered eligible rates and do not earn Starpoints or qualify for promotional earnings. Stays must be booked through any Starpoints-eligible channel, which includes a travel professional who books through those channels or the GDS. Stays will be processed for the promotion in the order they post to the registered member's account.

It occurs to me they have reasons for doing things this way. Off the top of my head I can think of a few comparisons:
- incremental stays by SPG members for this promo vs. last promo
- the swing to Marriott brands by SPG members who prefer 1-night stays
- the swing to SPG by long-term MR members who do >1 night stays
They should have a statistically significant base of people who were active in only one program MR or SPG who have now linked accounts. (That Day 1 status match may prove brilliant.) Now they need to test a lot of different ways to get us to spend more money. That's what marketing people do.

Ie, when I went to the Marriott site today, it only said I have 1 new promo, for the Marriott version. Had I not read on FT that there was a different SPG promo, I don't know when I would have found out about it. (Perhaps SPG would have sent me an email.)
Keep in mind that the last promo cycle (Jan-Apr) the Marriott and SPG versions were very similar, so people might not have an expectation (before reading about it) of them being opposite / complementary this summer promo cycle.

Actually prefer the SPG promo to the MR, as 2000 MR pts gets you very little. Plus, I have some stays in NewYork, DC and Europe that are 2 to 3 nights each in that period, so comes out better given the daily rates 2x and 3x than fixed point bonuses.

I am in. This is a great promo as far as I am concerned. Way better than double points for the first 3 stays and nothing for the next 19 nights.

3: Seems to be few "opt-out" properties

Why would you want to stay anywhere other than the Prince Gallery in Tokyo? It's the only SPG hotel that isn't garbage.
