FAQ :
http://members.marriott.com/faq/#will-rewards-and-spg-be-turning-into-one-program

Will Rewards and SPG be turning into one program?
These are two of the best programs in the industry, and we want you to benefit from everything that makes SPG and Rewards great. We don’t anticipate that the two programs will come together before 2018, and we will keep you informed of any updates. In the meantime, there’s no change to how you book reservations, manage your accounts or earn Elite night credits, points and miles in the current programs

Status Matches
MR Platinum <--> SPG Platinum
MR Gold <--> SPG Gold
MR Silver <--> SPG Preferred Plus
MR Member <--> SPG Preferred

If your status changes (i.e. Gold->Plat) in one program, your status in the other program will be automatically upgraded within 24 hours per Marriott FAQ

You can now link your Marriott Rewards or Ritz-Carlton Rewards account with your SPG account.
To link your accounts, log in to either account at:
http://www.spg.com/linkmarriott
http://members.marriott.com/

It will be a 3:1 transfer ratio between MR-SPG

If I have Lifetime Status in one of the programs, will I also get it in the other program when I link my accounts?
This is the Official Answer : "We appreciate your loyalty! Lifetime Status is specific to the program that you earned it in. While linking accounts will not result in Lifetime Status in the other program, your Elite status will be matched to the same Elite tier in the other program. Any existing Lifetime Status you already hold within either program will still be enjoyed within that program. We’re working on more ways to recognize your loyalty and Lifetime Status as we work towards harmonizing the programs, which we don’t anticipate happening until 2018."

Transferring points from SPG to MR does NOT change lifetime MR points.

Transferring points from SPG to MR does NOT count as activity & therefore does not extend the expiration date of points.

I agree in general with the above comments however if we are going to engange in a comparison excersie between MR and SPG accounts it should be on a appels to appels basis no all MR Platinum and SPG Platinum / MR Gold and SPG Gold are created equal. The obvious solution is to compare using a objective variable like $-spent or butt in bed nights (base nights) at a hotel or something similar.
For example a MR Gold with 60 base nights would in my book be ranked higher than SPG platinum with 25 base nights or a SPG Platinum with 75 base nights should be ranked higher than a MR Platinum with 40 base nights etc...The same logic could be exrapolated to LT status.... ....

+1, I have 17 nights this year thanks to my brand new, metallic Marriott Rewards Visa card. I have yet to spend a single night at Marriott, so if I can just maintain status by charging everything on the card, then why not? Marriott doesn't lose any money providing benefits to people who seldom use them. What could possibly go wrong?

+1, I also think this is ridiculous. I don't think SPG offers anything similar. However, I suppose I can part w/ $80 a month to push my combined LT nights counter over 750.

Adding 'thousands of Starpoints for an award night' would have been useful here. @:-)

It doesn't really matter how the chart has or has not changed. It matters how the individual hotels have changed in terms of their category (and the corresponding points cost) within the chart over those 16 years. The same is largely true with Marriott Rewards.

I am now an SPG and matched to a Marriott Platinum. I have re-qualified as an SPG Platinum until Feb 2019. Is my Marriott status going to be Platinum as well until then?

Until the program merger is complete, expect MR/SPG to do regular sweeps to match linked accounts. So one account may show a longer date once earned but the other will "keep up" with each sweep.

It now sounds like the earliest we can expect a combined program is actually 2019. Marriott's CEO and other execs have admitted the IT required for the back end of a combined program won't be ready at least until late 2018. They will need the IT for the front end customer interface before they can actually release and begin the new combined program. So it's almost certain to not happen until 2019--though the announcement may be sooner.

Even if they do not combine the programmes, I cannot foresee a bright future where MaRiot wouldn't "streamline" the programmes before they're combined.

Hopefully by 2019 they will develop the ability to have a folio emailed at check-out

Do you mean Marriott or Starwood?

I always get a folio emailed at check out with Starwood. I usually have an emailed folio even before I even awake on my final morning...and yet another emailed folio within an hour or so of check out if anything changed/added.
