To me 10k points are worth over 400 dollars, so why not spend up to 400 to get them?

10K are not "worth" $400 except in rare circumstances. So don't spend $400 just for the 10K bonus points.

You can always buy 10K points for $350 or, even better, wait for the points sale promos and buy them for $240-265.

As mentioned, this promo does tempt a certain subset of people into staying at different chains from their usual, probably spending more in the process than the bonus points are worth.

I only use star points when I can get at least a value of 4 cents per star point. For instance I normally can get a free night for 2500 (since it is 3000-500) at a hotel that costs 100 dollars or more (one time even 200 dollars). In all other cases I just pay cash.
