Not Starwood imposed

Like others, I agree with you. However, these fees are not imposed by Starwood. They are set by the owners of the hotels and have nothing to do with Starwood. Where we should be complaining is when we must pay them on point stays.

The other side to consider is that with fees, the property can assess them on award stays, which they couldn't do if they rolled it into the room rate.

Starwood should however require that these fees be included in the display price of the room, especially when comparing rates.

This is simply a way for the properties to advertise artificially low rates. I do hope a class action with severe penalties hits the property owners at some point.

While this is true, as long as there is disclosure that is visible and one can acknowledge prior to purchase, one is hard-pressed to prove damages. That said, whenever possible I avoid resort and facilities fees, even it it sends me to a non Starwood property.

Shall we have a moderator change the thread title and add a wiki to keep track of properties? At this point, it seems limited to the following properties (non-resort properties charging a daily facilities fee or resort fee).

  • Weekly guided morning runs
  • Complimentary bicycle rental on a first-come, first-served basis
  • 3 USD off an adult ticket at the California Academy of Sciences
  • 5 USD off a 48-hour adult ticket on City Sightseeing’s Hop On Hop Off Double Decker Bus
  • Shopping discounts (please ask the Concierge for details)

This no doubt grew out of the "Resort Fees" that started popping up about 15 years - which this charge was questionable it did provide some benefits like beach chairs/cabanas. golf club valet, valet parking, etc.

But this fee has no business in urban properties, particularly for what you get - even more particularly as a Platinum SPG member. I recently booked a "staycation" at the Park Central SF (looking forward to seeing the rebranding from the Westin) and am being hit with a $25 facilities fee. For BS things like internet (free to Gold/Plat members), bottled water (free to Gold/Plat members), gym access (should be free), in room coffee (REALLY???). And some more BS stuff they claim to be "a $100 value."

These fees leave patrons feeling "nickeled and dimed" and worse - it diminishes the value of the SPG Loyalty Program. At a minimum, they should programmatically waive this fee for their most loyal guests as they have figured how to do with internet (usually).
You Starwood, but does startwood on the property or properties you've posted?

Is this a Starwood or property ownership issue? Is there something in management (franchise) agreements that allow or forbid this practice? I think there a lot of variables.

Personally, I don't think this has a thing to do with SPG or relates to it.

Sheraton Parkway Toronto North. I think it's 3%. Said it's to offset parking lot/common areas maintenance, among other things. Stay there a lot. I told them I won't come back if they apply it, so it's usually waived for me.

Cheers,

The Parker Meridien is a property that has been doing this a while, but they disclosed that information.

Mandatory $10 Daily Facilities Charge - Starts 1/1/13 at Le Parker Meridien NYC

Personally, these thread are often overlooked - case in point the thread I've posted above - the information should be included in property specific master threads. In addition, they are rarely maintained. IE Club/Executive Lounge thread

Serious question? Are we posting this as a beneficial discussion and reference point or are we creating another "fee" thread? There are people that rarely research master threads, do we think there will be long term vested interest in this Thread? Some discussion of the listed properties is discussed in Resort Fees for Plats: Pls Post How Properties Are Handling "Alternative" Amenities Should these two threads be combined and re-titled?

Just food for thought.

Honestly, I can't remember the last time in 20 years that I made a local call on a hotel phone. Does anyone that stays in a hotel these days not have a cell phone?

Not a published benefit of SPG.

Spoken like someone who either only travels domestically or has someone else pay for their cell phone. Some people (gasp) actually travel to foreign countries! And many of those people do it on their own dime and don't want to pay ridiculous roaming charges.

That's a very ethocentric comment. It's not domestic for over 95% of the world.

I HATE these fees. And yet I still stay at the Park Central SF. Why? Even including this fee they are generally cheaper than the other properties in the area (except Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf which is not in the area). So... although I hate being told I must pay $25 for luggage storage and free 1800 calls (um, aren't 1800 calls free anyway!!?) - the fact is that their rates are still cheaper and that's all that matters.
