Unconfirmed: Starwood the target of Chinese Hotel Groups
"A source closer to the merge divulged that the newly-merged super hotel group is eyeing heavyweight Starwood Hotels and Resorts for global expansion. “If it managed to acquire Starwood, it would mean China will have the largest global hotel group in the world. The Jin Jiang-Plateno merger is just the forerunner,” he said."

I'm not a M&A expert but could this be potentially good news for SPG loyalists vs having the company taken over by someone like IHG? I think the overall concern with an IHG takeover would be the devaluations we would likely see in the SPG program (since the IHG program is generally perceived to be less "rewarding"). If they are taken over by this group wouldn't it seem likely that they would leave the SPG program alone since it doesn't seem to be their core competency? Just thinking out loud.

Interesting developments
Plateno’s 298,000 rooms and Jin Jiang 177,000 combined with SPGs 339000 rooms would give them 814K rooms, about 20% larger than IHG!

1. IHG - 686873
2. Hilton - 678630
3. Marriott - 653719
4. Wyndham - 645423
5. Choice - 602663
Starwood ranked 7th with 339243 rooms in 1161 properties

Wow.
Probably need to wake up to the fact that we all live in a global economy. Plus, the link that the OP provided clearly indicated significant US based VC backing for Plateno, whom I'm sure did fine in the recent deal.

Starwood being bought by a company owned by the Chinese government? No, thanks.

Interestingly, Plateno has an exclusive license from Hilton to develop the Hampton Inn brand in China.

I shudder to think what Chinese government ownership could mean for its worldwide hotel portfolio.

I wonder how many folks realize every time you go through a mainland China airport the government can - and in many cases does - upload all the data from your smartphone, iPad, laptop, etc...?

I've flown in and out of China multiple times and have never seen anyone getting their data searched so the "in many cases" you claim is untrue. Chinese airports are as busy if not more than US airports. I'm sure it happens but only if you are on their naughty list, just like in the US.

So can the US government (CBP)...

And, yes, it's true. Don't really care if you believe it or not.
