After having checked in at the desk, my app told me that I had to go back to the desk to get keyless activated. So what's the point? Shouldn't keyless automatically be activated when you check in at the desk--that would be optimal. I needed to check in at the desk because I was shortening my stay by 1 night. Thats something else the keyless checkin app didnt permit.

My phone shows as registered for keyless.

What am I missing?
You should also have received an "invitation" for Keyless for that stay. Did you accept it? Otherwise, you can ask the Front Desk to "push" the key to Keyless, but I've had mixed results with that at various W's (Hollywood, Montreal, Westwood, and Chicago-Lakeshore)

I did not get an invitation for keyless at all.

I've also stayed twice at the Sheraton in Herndon VA, same issue.

Do they have Keyless at Sheratons now? None are listed in the master list at the beginning of this thread.

OK, maybe I shouldn't have had keyless at that Sheraton, then.

But the Manhattan Financial District and Phoenix-Skyharbod Alofts definitely had keyless.

I requested keyless, but keyless was not pushed to my phone until I checked in at the desk. This was about 2 weeks ago. After checking into the hotel, no issues with the keyless. However, room keys did not work after that lol.

This keyless feature is very frustrating. I just changed my phone from Sony Xperia Z1 to Z5, but now found that the phone is not supported. I thought both are the same Android level.

It's not the OS level that is causing the issue, but the hardware implementation of the NFC chip within each phone (if it has one). Different manufacturers decides how things should work within their devices. Some choose to follow particular standards and some don't. This can even change between phones by the same manufacturer. So until a particular model is certified to follow a known coded standard or the app is written for use on that particular model, you're SOL.

If your phone is fairly new and doesn't work, you should report it to SPG. Maybe, just maybe, if they get enough dings on a particular model, they will assign resources to code it. If it's an older phone, little chance they will listen.

If it was me, I'd have the code identify the phone and it's abilities. Then it could tell you if it's supported. And if not, report back to SPG the specifics where they could use that to determine priorities for updates to the code.

Irrelevant, since Keyless uses Bluetooth, not NFC. It's much more likely that the device in question still hasn't ended up on Starwood's "white list", which seems to be updated manually. If the next Galaxy model came out tomorrow, it's a 100% chance that Keyless wouldn't be working due to the lead time.

That's interesting, I would've thought it was NFC, but then I don't know how they could make it so that only your phone could open it. Then again I don't really know how the tech works well enough to be able to speculate.

Sidebar as that comment got me thinking. Can you do keyless multiple keys if your guest has the proper phone/app etc?

I'm looking forward to trying this in Bogota but from the reports I'm guessing I'll have to visit the desk. A bit OT, I did a mobile check-in for a Marriott recently and then had to go to the desk. I don't know what I thought mobile check-in was for a hotel, and while the desk girl was fast, she still needed to double check my CC on file, get a signature and talk to me for a minute. Not sure what the point of online check-in is other than them knowing I will in fact show up?

Ok, wrong choice of words. "Low-powered bluetooth" does emulate NFC and the basics still apply. If the device does not give the app the ability to reduce the BT power, then the app fails. Letting the app self-authenticate can save a lot of effort as new devices are released and the cycle-time is getting shorter and shorter.

A white list is a means to control which devices will even attempt to work with the app. SPG wanting to test these devices is wise. Long turn times to update the list will be frustrating. They could still use the app to help them prioritize which devices to validate as people download the app and report the device back to SPG.

SPG Keyless (mobile, keyless check-in) - Now Live [Master Thread]

Question from 1st time user: Does Bluetooth have to be on in order to actually receive the hotel's invite to use keyless. Or does it only have to be on to unlock the door?
