when to achieve SPG Gold

My understanding is that if I achieve SPG Gold before Dec 31, 2014, my gold status will last until end of Feb 2015. But if I achieve SPG Gold in January 2015, does that mean my Gold is good til end of Feb 2016?
Thanks

Really?

I thought it's achieve elite status (gold/plat) 1 jan 2015 to 31 dec 2015 ==> valid 28 feb 2017

op, if you achieve gold on or prior dec 31, 2014, your status is until feb 28, 2016. If you achieve elite status anytime during 2015, youll be elite from the time you achieve the required nights or stays until feb 28, 2017

8.1.Qualifying Period. The qualifying period for an SPG Member to earn Elite Preferred Guest Membership Status and become a Gold Preferred Guest or a Platinum Preferred Guest is from January 1st through December 31st of each year (the "Qualifying Period"). Once an SPG Member reaches Elite Preferred Guest Membership Status, the applicable benefits will commence during that Qualifying Period and continue through the subsequent calendar year. For example, if an SPG Member meets the Gold Minimum Requirement during the 2014 Qualifying Period, the SPG Member will become a Gold Preferred Guest for the remainder of 2014, all of 2015 and January and February of 2016.

Yes, qualifying year and status year differ. You qualify on a calendar year, and status is good through Feb the second year after earning. This provides at least 14 months of status. My guess is to allow them some slack should you earn status on Dec 31, it will take them a few days before it kicks in (processing time).

The beauty of this scheme is if you have the ability to plan heavy travel during the beginning of the year, you can go a full year with no travel and still keep your status intact.

I'm 1 stay away from reaching Gold and have no travel plans at SPG properties between now and year end. Having never experienced SPG elite status before...is it worth burning 3k SPG points on the category 2 property in town for Gold status?

My travel pattern at SPG will likely stay the same with around 10 stays next year. AMEX has sent me a few targeted Platinum offers which I know carries SPG Gold but the 40,000 bonus they're offering hasn't got me to bite.

Um, Wrong. You seem to be confusing an outdated comp status policy.

You earn Gold in a calendar year, it's good until the end of February two calendar years later.

So Gold 1 Jan to 28 Feb 2015 = Valid until 28 Feb 2017, just as with the rest of 2015.

Making some assumptions, which you can correct...

10 stays, 2 nights each, $150/night = $3,000 spend = 3,000 extra points with Gold status bonus

10 stays, Gold amenity @250 pts (125 for Element , Aloft, 4pt) = 2500 extra points

That's nearly doubling your investment without figuring any other benefits.
