My Award Reservation Was Randomly Upgraded to a Suite Online

I'm a gold member who booked a 5 night stay a few weeks ago in an Asian Sheraton property on points for a regular room. Today I went to look at my reservation online and it's actually listed as my room being a suite. I have no idea why or how. I don't have any of those suite upgrade nights and didnt pay/ask to be upgraded. I checked, I was only charged points for the standard room.

What happened here. Why was I upgraded? Bug? Hotel full and they decided to upgrade an award night? Anyway scratching my head. Has this happened to anyone else.

So what's the chance of actually being given the suite on check in?

But why would they choose a gold award stay?

Award stay doesn't matter - in theory/rules and in my real experience. They could be getting close to capacity, upgrading folks to empty suites, and there weren't PLT's (or whatever criteria are used) ahead of you.

You have a pretty good change of it sticking, though reversals have happened.

Yep, the same happened to me twice. It's the hotel trying to manage their inventory - I suppose if they have high demand for regular rooms and low for suites they figure they might as well upgrade you properly so they can free up some regular rooms.

Capability of viewing real time changes to your reservations didn't exist in 06-08. It came around 2010 I think. Just relax. You may get your upgrade or not. It could be still changed by FD a minute before your arrival. You may wish to print the page and bring it to FD at check-in. If downgraded, you may still present the printout and, humbly, ask for consideration again based on pre-upgrade. Good luck

I suggest that you call the hotel and demand that you be given the room that you had originally booked. Tell them that you're only gold and that it was only a reward booking. That should do the trick.
The nerve these hotels have granting upgrades without your consent!!!

Do you remember the property you were at when that happened? Maybe they still have it in Lost & Found!
